Do you watch television and love making home improvements? Do you like watching other people?s homes change from a pig sty into a penthouse? Here is a list of the best home improvement programmes.
Changing Rooms
Hosted by Carol Smiley, this was one of the first home improvement shows of its kind, where a couple would swap houses with a another couple and get together with a team to make over a few rooms in a house in a matter of days or even hours. It ran from 1996 until 2004 and can still occasionally be seen repeated.
The best thing about it was the genius little tips the designers would impart on the nation: like how to reinvigorate your old fireplace with lots of painstakingly dabbed on gold leaf, or how to build a new shelf out of an old sideboard.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
This show is a spinoff of Extreme Makeover which gives people a complete over haul. This involves plastic surgery, exercise regimes, wardrobe makeovers and hair style changes. What the home edition does is the same, but for your home as well. In true extreme fashion they will remodel your interior, redecorate everything or put on an extension. Or they may even knock down your entire house and build you a new one from scratch. The look on their faces when their new home is revealed is the best bit.
How Clean is Your House
Kim and Aggie are all about the cleanliness. The show follows them as they go into people?s houses which are extremely dirty and cluttered and bring them back to life. Often the families who live in the houses are shown how they can keep it clean and tidy and are made to throw out lots of clutter they have accumulated. The best bit is when they first arrive and have to creep around the disgusting houses uncovering horrific things under other horrific things.
Grand Designs
The charismatic Kevin McCloud hosts this wonderful programme which sees him following a building project from start to finish. The projects are selected for their wild settings, their obscure plans, huge budgets and their eccentric building materials, but above all for their grand designs. The buildings can be anything from an ancient Tuscan castle to a modern project tucked deep in a corner of London. The best bit of the show, is the whole show. The way the programme is shot and the amazing buildings which grow before your eyes make for encapsulating viewing.
Home Improvement
Tim Allen stars in this American sitcom about his family, his home improvement cable TV show and how he is actually not very good at home improvements. The fact is that whether you?re looking for double glazing repairs or planning alterations to your lean to conservatories design, don?t call Tim. The best bit is when in each episode Tim tries to give some ordinary piece of machinery or equipment ?more power? often adding a V8 to something like a vacuum cleaner, with predictably calamitous results. Ace.
All of these programmes will make excellent viewing choices for anyone with a passion for home improvement.
About the Author: Sam Qam doesn?t worry about double glazing repairs for his lean to conservatories front end due to the solid and reliable quality of the windows installed.
