Los Angeles/USA U-16 Girls Select Volleyball team

The Los Angeles/USA U-16 Girls Select Volleyball team captured the Gold Medal at the 45th Annual International Children's Games held recently in Lanarkshire, Scotland. After sweeping defending champion Slovenia in the semifinals, USA defeated Poland 17-25, 25-13, 15-9 to capture the gold. The International Children's Games are modeled after the Summer Olympics with the athletes staying in dorms, opening ceremonies including the lighting of the torch and closing ceremonies. This year's event drew 1,250 athletes and 250 coaches representing 78 cities from 34 countries. Bodybuilding: The United Natural Bodybuilding Association (UNBA) Samson & Delilah USA Muscle Classic will be held Saturday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Playhouse, 710 Pier Avenue. Open to all natural men and women, competitions include national qualifiers for the Fitness Southern California Regional Pageant, Figure America Southern Cal, Ms. Bikini Southern California and Model Southern California. Basketball: The HAX / ARC Youth Basketball League is holding registration for Recreation and Travel Team divisions. Open to boys and girls grades 1-8, the league begins Sept. 17-19. Aquatics: Tryouts for the Beach Cities Swimming team take place at the Redondo Union High School pool on alternate Mondays. Swim lessons, lap swim, and all other programming will also resume when the pool reopens. Community members are encouraged to join family swims on Saturday and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. and for lap swims Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.-2 .pm. Southern California Aquatics (SCAQ) has begun a Masters Swim Program at the new Redondo Union High School pool with weekday workouts 5:30-6:30 a.m., Tues. and Thurs. 8-9 p.m. and Sundays at 10 a.m. Free introductory workouts are offered. Volleyball: California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) hosts the California Cup State Championships at two venues Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3-4. At the Manhattan Beach Pier Men?s A, AA, Unrated and Women?s A and AA tournaments will be held Saturday followed by Men?s B, Co-ed A, Open and Unrated competitions on Sunday. The California Cup Youth Championships will be held Sunday at the Manhattan Beach Pier for boys and girls 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U divisions. Action begins at 9 a.m. each day. Volleyball Ventures hosts men?s and women?s doubles tournaments beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Pier The event includes four levels of play (beginner to advanced) and is played in a round-robin format. Players can sign up individually, rotating players from their pool for each match. Players must be 18 years or older and VBV members. Beach and indoor volleyball club Team WAVE (We Are Volleyball Elite) has scheduled tryouts for its South Bay program. Boys in U14 and U16 divisions are invited to tryout Sept. 9-10. Registration and volunteer positions are now open for the United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) Fall Season. Fitness: AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach is offering its Open Rock Wall and Ropes Course on Saturdays from 12-3 p.m. (Rock Wall is also open Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.). Whether a single child, the whole family, or just a group of friends (Ages 5 and up for rock wall, 8 and up for ropes course), the course provides challenges of solving problems and overcoming obstacles. Groups of seven will start every hour and will take approximately 45 minutes to complete the courses. Advance registration is recommended. Cost is $8-$20 depending on activities.
