Arizona Girl Given Fake Award For Best Homework Excuses; Mom Says Teacher "Humiliated" Her

The mother of an 8-year-old girl presented with a "Catastrophe Award" for the best/most excuses for not doing homework believes her child was humiliated by her teacher.

Christina Valdez said her daughter, Cassandra Garcia, came home one day from class at Desert Springs Academy in Tucson, Ariz., with the paper award.

The document, which looks like a colorful card, says: "You're Tops! Catastrophe Award. Awarded to Cassandra Garcia. For Most Excuses for Not Having Homework!"

The teacher signed and dated the card, which included a smiley face.

The teacher announced the award in front of Garcia's entire third grade class, while other students laughed at her daughter, Valdez told KGUN-TV in Tucson.

When she called to complain, the principal "blew me off," Valdez added. "She said it was a joke that was played and that the teachers joke around with the children."

Valdez told KGUN that she didn't find any of it funny.

"I think it's cruel and no child should be given an award like this. It's disturbing," she said, adding that she was unaware of any problem with homework.

You have to be kidding me.?Cottage Life drops a Canadiana bomb with ?A Happy Makeshift Vision? [.pdf of story], in which famous Canadian poet George Bowering writes about famous Canadian poet Al Purdy and his old A-frame abode in Prince Edward County. The story has the vibe of a Purdy poem. Give it the award.

OK. Wait. What else is in the A&E category?

There?s a high Arctic Canadiana bomb from Canadian Art magazine. In ?Man Standing,? Timothy Taylor profiles Zacharias Kunuk, the director of Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, The Journals of Knud Rasmussen and Qapirangajuq: Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change. The first section of the story has a few too many overly poetic turns of phrase that draw too much attention to themselves: ?[the airport] hurtles by in a rainbow spray of ice crystals?.the way tongue drifts form in the winter season.? But, Taylor?s tale really shines later with his insights into the director?s films and the cultural psychology of the Inuit?without using wanky phrases, such as ?cultural psychology.?

In The Walrus, Tom Jokinen explores opera from the inside with ?Adventures of a Supernumerary.? The writer gets all immersion journalism as an extra (supernumerary) in a Canadian Opera Company production of Richard Strauss?s Ariadne auf Naxos. Jokinen weaves various themes and images with ease. My favourite line: ?The Finn wears his heart not on his sleeve, but in a Tupperware container in the refrigerator, the better to bear the trials of a working life.?

The Walrus also gives us ?Modern Inconveniences? by Adele Weder. After I read the first line, I decided I didn?t need to read any more.

In his 1908 essay ?Ornament and Crime,? Viennese architect Adolf Loos waxed magnanimous: ?I have made the following discovery and I pass it on to the world: The evolution of culture is synonymous with the removal of ornament from utilitarian objects.?

In Grade 9, in an essay on whether the narrator of Edgar Allan Poe?s ?The Tell-Tale Heart? was insane or not, I opened with ?The Collins English Dictionary defines ?insanity? as??

No one should read that either.

L?actualit? has?a profile of Karine Vanasse, who I?ve only seen in Woody Allen?s Midnight in Paris. (I really should see Polytechnique.)

Not surprisingly, Gerald Hannon wrote a fantastic profile of Kent Monkman, the visual artist known for his gender-bending trickster figure Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, who subverts European/Native power structures and makes Monkman a truck load of dough. Hannon lays down words with the precision of a poet. He could win this category, and I have him picked for his story in the Profiles NMA.

In the modern music department, Brian D. Johnson has a profile of Tony Bennett, ?Steppin? out with Tony,? in Maclean?s; Sarah Liss has a profile of Deadmau5, ?The Man in the Mouse,? in Toronto Life; and No?mi Mercier has a profile of Karkwa, ?Les derni?res fl?ches de Karkwa?? in L?actualit?. Of the three, Mercier?s work is the strongest. Her article about the 2010 Polaris Music Prize?winning group examines a band that is famous, but not famous enough. Also, to riff on the story?s deck, it?s one solitude on an odyssey within the other. Call this one a Hugh MacLennan Canadiana bomb, which might pack more megatons than Cottage Life?s bit of maple ordnance.

Military metaphors aside, my pick for the NMA does not feature Purdy or Karkwa, but a game of chance and a writer who passed away in 2010. Don Gillmor writes about writer Paul Quarringtion and his final months before dying of lung cancer in ?All In? [.pdf of story]. The story, which appeared in Eighteen Bridges, weaves Quarringtion?s story with the games of poker that he, Gillmor and others played. The story is a tightly written elegy and an effort to deal with chance and mortality. It?s the strongest story in the A&E category.

Chargers' Mathews ready for breakout year

Monday, May 28, 2012

I know, I know. He's injury prone. He's a disappointment. He fumbles too much. He reported to camp out of shape.

Third-year tailback Ryan Mathews hasn't met expectations inherent for the 12th pick in the draft. No one knows better than the Chargers. GM A.J. Smith surrendered a small bounty to trade up for Mathews three Aprils ago, and so far the organization has largely seen only flashes of potential.

But they're buying in now, and fantasy football owners should, too. Here's why:

1. Mathews is already a really good fantasy back.

There's a perception that Mathews is a tease at best and a bust at worst, and that was true during his rookie campaign (2010). He had one of the quietest breakout years in the league last season.

Despite missing two games and portions of others, Mathews finished the 2011 season as the No. 7 fantasy running back. He scored more fantasy points than Adrian Peterson, Steven Jackson, Frank Gore, Matt Forte, and Chris Johnson. Over Mathews' last 16 games, he's piled up 1,266 yards and ten touchdowns on 260 carries (4.87 YPC), to go with 56 catches for 502 yards. By that measure, Mathews would have been a top-five fantasy back over the course of last season.

2. Mathews is set up to contend for the league lead in touches.

As alluded to above, the Chargers know Mathews' strengths and weaknesses better than anyone. Yet they let committee partner Mike Tolbert walk for a below-market deal in Carolina, and didn't sign a replacement. Coach Norv Turner has talked up Le'Ron McClain as second in line for touches. A fullback, McClain has exceeded 50 single-season rushing attempts once in five years. San Diego's only other noteworthy backfield addition was seventh-round pick Edwin Baker, who lost his starting job to sophomore Le'Veon Bell at Michigan State last year.

Tolbert's departure frees up goal-line and passing-down work that is so crucial for feature backs to maximize fantasy value. And we have a decent sample size to examine Mathews when he's been the go-to guy.

Be it due to injury or game plan, Tolbert played 20 or fewer snaps in eight games over the past two seasons. In those games, Mathews capitalized for 149 combined carries, 645 rushing yards, 19 receptions, and 145 receiving yards. And he scored eight TDs. Double those numbers, and you have a realistic -- maybe even slightly conservative -- projection for Mathews' 2012 statistics.

Which leads into my next point ...

3. Norv Turner believes in every-down workhorses.

We haven't seen it the past two years because Mathews has underachieved and Tolbert was so good, but the Chargers' coach has a long, documented history of feeding the football to his top back relentlessly. In Turner's 21 years as an NFL head coach or coordinator, his No. 1 running back has exceeded 270 carries 14 times, and 300 carries on 10 occasions. Over the course of Turner's coaching career, his lead back has averaged 282 carries and 43 catches per season. Turner not only believes in bellcow ball carriers, he involves them heavily in the passing game.

Last season, Philip Rivers completed 123 passes to tailbacks -- the highest total in football. A few of this year's running back receptions will be sprinkled amongst McClain, Jacob Hester, and Curtis Brinkley or Baker, but Mathews is going to be one of the most oft-targeted backs in the league.

4. The Chargers' offense will move the ball this season.

In 2011 -- by all accounts a down year for Turner's offense -- the Chargers ranked sixth in the league in total yards, tied for fifth in points scored, sixth in passing, and 16th in rushing. Turner annually fields an offensive juggernaut. Turner's team has ranked in the top 11 in total offense in four straight seasons. That's a reliable track record when it comes to fantasy football investment.

I try to avoid jumping to conclusions based strictly on prior year stats, though, and there is offseason turnover in San Diego to consider. Schematically, Robert Meachem may actually prove a superior fit for Turner's vertical offense than outgoing top wideout Vincent Jackson. Whereas V-Jax was a buildup speed receiver, Meachem is a true burner on the outside. And from a blocking standpoint, San Diego won't lose much. Meachem was always regarded as the Saints' top blocking wideout.

Turner also plans to use the slot receiver more. Historically a two-wideout coach, Turner can look to promising second-year man Vincent Brown or $13.5 million free-agent pickup Eddie Royal to work the middle of the field, along with Antonio Gates. When teams put more receivers on the field, it forces defenses to adjust into nickel alignments. And those are easier to run against.

5. Mathews appears physically and mentally ready for a leap.

Mathews openly admits his fitness wasn't up to par at the start of 2011 training camp, after the lockout. Mathews didn't just fail his conditioning test to open camp, he couldn't even finish it. And he's holding himself accountable.

?You just know you?re letting guys down,? Mathews told the Union-Tribune San Diego last week. ?Guys are looking at you and saying, ?Come on.? It?s hard, man. You got to live with yourself the next couple weeks or days just thinking about it. ?They did it. Why couldn?t I??

?I didn?t have the offseason workout like I?ve had this year. I really didn?t know what to expect. This year, it?s going to be a lot different.?

Hearing it from Mathews is one thing. Hearing it from team captain Hester is another.

?You should see him with his shirt off,? said Hester, Mathews' workout partner this year. ?He looks like Arnold back in the day. We?ve been pushing each other. Shoot, I?ve tried to kill him a couple times. He?s held with it. He?s gone every step with me ...

?I can?t stress how hard he?s been working. I expect him to be great. I really do.?

Turner recently suggested that Mathews is capable of leading the league in rushing.

I wouldn't put it past him.

I know, I know. He's injury prone. He's a disappointment. He fumbles too much. He reported to camp out of shape.

Misconception: divorce harms children | Pittsburgh Family Law ...

In divorce cases in Pennsylvania and anywhere else in the country, matters are often made more complicated when the best interests of a child or multiple children must be considered. Parents may have to set aside any tensions they feel toward one another, and work together to settle issues in a manner that will most benefit their children.

In some cases, parents may think that staying together instead of obtaining a divorce is the best option for children. The disagreements and differences often do not cease and ultimately could cause more tension in a marriage that already isn't working. This tension and strain is often felt by the children.

Though there may be a stigma that divorce harms children, in many cases it can be seen that children benefit from divorce. Especially should their parents truly not get along with one another anymore, and spend their time acting negatively toward each other. Some parents may not be aware that their tension and unhappiness can often translate into tension and unhappiness in their children. After a divorce much of this tension can dissolve and everyone from parents to children may get along better.

Additionally, parents who are happy with the custody arrangement negotiated with their attorney may allow children to see both parents still as positive influences in their lives. Parents may interact more positively with each other, as well as fulfill complete "parent" roles from nurturing children to taking care of the home. Divorce is a big change and may come with a difficult adjustment period for children who are accustomed to their parents being one unit. However, in many cases it can be much more beneficial for children to have parents who are happy and positive in their relationships.

Getting Back to Nature, One Child at a Time | Sports & Recreation ...

It used to be that all it took to get youngsters engaged in outdoor recreation was opening the door. Kids were eager to stay outside until dark, playing marathon games of hide-and-seek or kick the can; hunkering down with pals at the local fishing hole; or stretching their imaginations in the woods and fields behind their homes.

Today? After years of witnessing a trend that saw increasingly more kids interested in indoor "activities" like video games, television and online surfing, the Michigan No Child Left Inside Coalition is taking the battle to reconnect kids with the natural world to Michigan?s state capital. It?s just one step in the important journey to help children and their families better grasp the good things that come with an immersion in "all things outdoors."

On Tuesday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., coalition members and representatives of the Michigan Recreation and Park Association will be in Lansing on the Capitol lawn, for a day of outdoor-minded advocacy and activities ? including canoe and kayak simulations; disc golf; nature interpretation; games; areas to practice casting a fishing line, and more.

The folks at the Michigan No Child Left Inside Coalition see the Capitol event as an easy yet powerful way to showcase the facts about getting more kids outdoors, more often.

"The benefits of outdoor recreation have been heavily documented," said Raymond Rustem, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources? lead coordinator for the state?s No Child Left Inside effort.

"Research shows that children who regularly get opportunities to play freely in the outdoors demonstrate greater levels of creativity, cooperation, conflict resolution and leadership," Rustem said. "Kids who get outdoors are less likely to be obese and generally exhibit fewer symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder."

Often, Rustem said, even just having a view of green spaces decreases stress and improves test scores among students.

With all of that good information, it might seem that parents, educators, administrators and others would have an easier time of getting kids outdoors, right?

Not so. The DNR, recreation agencies and others have been fighting the good fight against a steady and growing stream of electronic and other entertainment sources that are competing mightily for young people?s attention. The results, according to Rustem, have been "startling."

A 2007 study conducted by the University of Illinois found that outdoor-based recreation had declined 18 percent to 25 percent since the early ?80s. More striking was the suggestion from another study that children spend an average of six hours a day with electronic devices (televisions, computers, handheld games, etc.), yet only 30 minutes per week in unstructured play outdoors.

Rustem said research points out that, within one generation, the percentage of people who indicated that the outdoors was the most influential environment of their childhood dropped from 96 percent to 46 percent.

"If this trend continues, it will have major implications ? nationally and here at home ? for outdoor recreation and conservation in the future," Rustem said.

Books like "Last Child in the Woods" and "Nature Principle" by Richard Louv put into words what many people knew or suspected: Kids just aren?t interacting with the outdoors the way that previous generations did. If that sad reality is ever to be reversed, someone is going to have to help make it happen.

One might ask if there?s any good news on the horizon. The answer, fortunately, is yes.

Consider the following developments:

  • Aided by a Kellogg Foundation community action grant, Kalamazoo Nature Center created the "Outside in Our Schoolyard" program. In just two years, it has grown to include four schools and 150 students, all sharing information and ideas on getting kids outdoors, and the creation of a butterfly garden.
  • Many outdoors clubs and groups are using social media to research, promote and plan their events and trips ? everything from biking and hiking to boating and camping.
  • Several Michigan state parks offer the First-Time Camper program, which ? for just $20 ? gives novice campers the use of a tent and other equipment, plus guidance from a park employee during two nights of camping. This program includes everything from instruction on how to build a campfire to the supplies for making s?mores.
  • In partnership with local youth organizations in urban areas like Detroit, Flint and Muskegon, the DNR?s Stepping Stones program helps youngsters explore the outdoors through activities (like map-reading, camping, fishing and archery) at state parks. Last year, 4,000+ urban children got familiar with the outdoor world through this program.

As parks and recreation agencies make it easier for people of all ages to explore and strengthen their outdoor skills, the outdoor tradition will be strengthened, too.

The movement to help young people forge a connection with outdoor recreation and the natural world has been building for years, and it?s picking up steam. The Michigan DNR continues to be right in the thick of it.

"The Department of Natural Resources has a long history of promoting outdoor recreation," said Maia Stephens, recreation programmer for the DNR?s Parks and Recreation Division. "For more than 90 years, Michigan state parks have provided plenty of opportunities for people to gather with family and friends to enjoy many recreational pursuits."

With more than 100 state parks and recreation areas dotting the map, Stephens said Michigan has something for everyone. She cited the DNR?s 10 interpretive centers ? eight of them with fully developed visitors? centers ? to help spread the word about the fun and fitness of just getting outdoors.

Taking that thought even further, the DNR created Recreation 101, a hands-on program at state parks, designed to help people learn the basics about a variety of recreation skills (from geocaching and biking to windsurfing and outdoor cooking).

Stephens said that more than 400 such learning opportunities are available this summer, and each is a chance to introduce outdoor traditions to more kids, through parents, aunts and uncles and family friends.

This year, the DNR is getting a boost from the Michigan Recreation and Park Association, which is helping to promote Recreation 101 through its membership.

"The Michigan Recreation and Park Association is thrilled to partner with the DNR to promote outdoor recreation opportunities in Michigan," said MRPA Chief Operating Officer Ann Conklin. "It?s crucial that all levels of parks and recreation providers, including municipal, county, regional and state departments, work together to expose residents to the wonderful natural resources and recreation opportunities available throughout our state."

Milliken State Park on the Detroit River offers another inviting "get outdoors" weekend during Detroit River Days (June 22-24), with plenty of activities that will keep kids busy and, hopefully, inspire them to reach for a fishing pole instead of the remote control.

Evans finishes 6th in 800 at Olympic tuneup meet

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) ? Janet Evans finished sixth in the 800-meter freestyle Sunday at the Speedo Grand Challenge in the former Olympic champion's final tuneup meet before the Olympic trials next month when she'll try to make the U.S. team at 40.

Haley Anderson, who also competes in open water swimming, won the race in 8 minutes, 33.65 seconds. The 20-year-old swimmer who swims at Southern California will try to make the London Olympics in an open-water qualifier June 9 in Portugal.

Anderson raced former Olympian Kate Ziegler to the wall, with Ziegler touching second in 8:33.97.

"She really pushed it so that made me get in an extra gear," Anderson said.

Ziegler won the 200 and 400 freestyles earlier in the three-day meet, and will try to qualify for her second straight Olympic team at the trials in Omaha.

"I wanted to be a little faster than that," she said.

Megan Rankin, an 18-year-old who trains with Evans, was third.

Evans finished in 8:49.36. She stayed close to the top three in the early stages of the 16-lap race before fading in the second half of the eight-woman race. She was the first woman to win back-to-back Olympic titles in the 800 in 1988 and '92.

"It was a little disappointing, but I think she's tired from training," said Mark Schubert, Evans' longtime coach.

During her comeback, Schubert has tinkered slightly with Evans' famed windmill stroke in which her head and shoulders come up out of the water more than most swimmers.

"We tried to get her head down and get her to swim in and out of her turns a little better, which she's doing," Schubert said. "You don't make huge changes. It's just trying to figure out the right things to do the last four or five weeks before trials."

Three-time Olympian Jason Lezak won the 100 free in 49.96, the only man under 50 seconds in the final. He carried 2-year-old son Ryan on the awards podium.

"I had a real solid first 50 and coming off the wall, I did what I wanted to do," he said. "The last 15 was a little painful, but with rest I'll be able to take it out faster, easier and come back stronger. I was 50.4 at the previous meet and I really wanted to be under 50, so that was good."

British Olympian Ellen Gandy won the 200 butterfly in 2:09.83 to go with her victory in the 100 fly on Saturday. She clutched a check for $600 covering her earnings in her first U.S. meet. She also earned gift cards to a coffee shop and a bookstore.

"I really wanted to get an iPhone, so this will go nicely toward that," she said, adding that she plans to buy the phone before she returns to Australia, where she lives with her family and trains.

Nick D'Arcy, considered a strong medal contender for Australia's Olympic team, easily won the 200 fly in 1:57.16, a meet record. He was the only swimmer to go under 2 minutes in the race.

"For the kind of pressure we're under at the moment training-wise, it's a pretty good swim," he said. "It's about where I expected to be at."

D'Arcy missed the 100 fly final Saturday night because he was in the restroom with an upset stomach when the finalists were called to the starting blocks. He was disqualified in that event, but wasn't prevented from swimming Sunday because the races were running ahead of the estimated timeline.

"It was pretty unfortunate," he said. "We're over here to get in some good racing, but I did a time trial instead and went a 53.7 which is a good time for me, so I was still pretty happy about that."

Earlier this month, Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates defended D'Arcy's selection amid accusations of a secret deal to put him on the team. He missed the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2009 world championships after being convicted of assaulting former swimmer Simon Cowley in a Sydney bar in March 2008.

D'Arcy was ordered to pay $370,000 in damages and costs, but declared bankruptcy. He earned $300 for his win at this meet.

Cowley, whose face had to be surgically rebuilt after the assault, said in a report in several Australian newspapers that Swimming Australia was involved in a secret deal to allow D'Arcy back into the team despite ethical concerns.

As he was asked about Cowley's comments, D'Arcy told a reporter, "Careful." He then brushed past, saying, "Yeah, thanks for your time."

Vlad Morozov, a former Russian national team member, won the 100 backstroke in a meet record 54.67 over former Australian Olympian Ashley Delaney. He touched in 54.74.

Four swimmers instead of the usual eight made the finals except in the distance events at this meet as a way to get athletes to swim faster in the preliminaries. The swimmer with the fastest time going into the final spins a wheel to determine the prize money that goes to the winner. Second and third-place finishers receive nominal amounts and all four finalists receive a gift card of their choice.

Robbie Williams says he likes SoccerAid because he gets to see his football heroes like David Seaman naked

The Take That singer joked: ?It?s amazing ? you get to see them naked.

?I always wanted to be in the shower with Seaman.?

Rob added that if his England side for the Unicef charity match ? including David Seaman, Mark Owen and Olly Murs ? start to flag, he?ll be giving them a half-time rub down.

He said: ?My pep talk will be a lot of massaging of the shoulders and massaging of the egos ? as well as a few swear words thrown in.?

Pity the bloke who has to give the hairdryer treatment to the rival Rest Of The World side as it includes Roy Keane, Mike Myers and Woody Harrelson are among his team-mates.

Serge Pizzorno is also in their squad and says training for the match at Old Trafford today has made him happier than ever that his football career never took off.

The Kasabian guitarist said: ?I?m built to be in a rock and roll band, not for this footballing lark. I can still drink all night, but I can?t handle this.?

And that was before he was tackled by Jonathan Wilkes.

USC men reach NCAA tennis final

The top-seeded USC men's tennis team defeated rival UCLA, 4-1, in a wild NCAA semifinal at Athens, Ga., and earned a chance to win its fourth consecutive national championship Tuesday. The Trojans (32-1) will meet third-seeded Virginia at 2 p.m. PDT in Athens. USC beat the Cavaliers in last year's final.

Virginia defeated seventh-seeded Pepperdine to reach the championship match. Lightning and thunder interrupted action midway through the first sets of both semifinal matches, forcing them to move indoors to be played out on two courts apiece.

On the women's side, top-seeded UCLA earned a thrilling 4-3 victory over fifth-seeded USC in Athens. The Bruins (26-2) will face second-seeded Florida (26-1) on Tuesday at 10 a.m. PDT. The Gators advanced to the final with a 4-3 win over third-seeded Duke.

Rafael Nadal showed he's still the man to beat on clay, defeating Novak Djokovic, 7-5, 6-3, Monday in a rain-delayed final at Rome to win his record sixth Italian Open and regain the No. 2 ranking.

After losing to Djokovic in seven straight finals ? including Rome last year ? Nadal has now won two straight against the top-ranked Serb after also capturing the Monte Carlo Masters on clay. Nadal also moved ahead of Roger Federer in the rankings with the French Open starting Sunday.

Djokovic, drained in Monte Carlo after the death of his grandfather, made 41 unforced errors in this match. His double-fault on the last point gave Nadal the 49th title of his career and his 35th on clay.

Nadal did not drop a set all tournament to clinch his third Italian Open victory in four years.

Ex-NFL players, wives file concussion lawsuit

Thirteen former football players and five of their wives filed a civil lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against the NFL and helmet manufacturer Riddell, seeking damages for injuries and financial losses they incurred allegedly from concussive brain injuries sustained during the players' professional careers.

The plaintiffs include former USC receivers Johnnie Morton and John Jackson and former UCLA receiver Mike Sherrard.

The suit says the NFL and other defendants "deliberately ignored, misrepresented and actively concealed" information regarding the damaging effects of repetitive concussive brain injuries.

It appears as though the Ducks found a solution for the heavy workload starting goalie Jonas Hiller endured this season, their search for a quality backup winding up in Sweden.

On Monday, they signed goaltender Viktor Fasth to a one-year contract worth $1 million. His contract is a one-way deal. The 29-year-old has been named the Swedish Elite League's goaltender of the year the last two seasons. With AIK Stockholm, he had five shutouts with a 2.12 goals allowed average and .931 save percentage in 46 games last season.

Former West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart, who was hailed as Rich Rodriguez's successor but wound up leaving the school in a messy split, died Monday of what athletic department officials said was an apparent heart attack. He was 59.

Stewart's family notified the university and said Stewart had been out golfing with the longtime friend who hired him as head coach, former athletic director Ed Pastilong. West Virginia spokesman Michael Fragale said he had no further details, and Pastilong couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The Reality of College Sports Scholarships

Written by Martha Brockenbrough
Wednesday, 01 November 2006

When you look at your kids and fantasize about their futures, which dream seems more likely to come true?that Dick and Jane will grow up to be neurosurgeons, or professional athletes?

If you look at it from a purely statistical standpoint, the odds of either are slim.

There are 4,500 neurosurgeons and 17,000 professional athletes in the United States.

But let?s say you broadened your fantasy horizons a bit and allowed your child to operate on more parts of the body than just the brain.

Which is more likely then?a career as a surgeon, or as a professional athlete?

In that case, surgeon wins, scalpel down. There are about 79,000 of them running around the United States, and each has completed many, many years of expensive education and training. It?s a rare achievement, and one that most people would recognize as such.

This is perhaps why hordes of parents don?t salivate about surgery scholarships for their kids, even though some surgeons, over their careers, earn professional-athlete-sized salaries.

Still, the launching pad of a pro career?the college scholarship?is a dream all too many hold dear. They?re really rare?-about 126,000 a year, for an average of just under $8,000 per student. Only Division I and Division II schools of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) offer them. The Ivy League schools don?t (but they?re well-enough endowed to have plenty of financial aid for kids in need).

How do you get an athletic scholarship?
For starters, you have to be a star at your sport. Athletic scholarships go to only the best high school athletes. One college counselor I spoke to said, ?You?ve got to be very good. Very, very good.?

The NCAA partially funds these scholarships, but individual schools are responsible for doling out the money and deciding which sports to support.

To be considered for a scholarship, students must register at the end of junior year with a clearinghouse to prove that they?re amateurs and academically eligible. Eligibility depends on grade-point averages in approved courses, and scores on standardized tests. (Details are available at the NCAA Clearinghouse Web site.)

And that?s not all. Bruce Bailey, who counsels students at Lakeside School in Seattle, says students can also market themselves to recruiters?and, indeed, might have to if they?re not playing a marquee sport like football.

This might include hiring someone to videotape the athletes? play, or traveling to showcase athletic events, which often occur during finals week. (?This drives me nuts,? Bailey says.)

Recruiters are allowed to contact students around junior year, depending on the sport. Then, to be eligible for a scholarship at a particular school, student-athletes have to apply and be accepted.

If all works out well, they?re offered scholarships, which can cover part or all of their fees for books, tuition, and room and board.

Reality check
A sports scholarship isn?t guaranteed for all four years, though. The athletes have to prove their mettle on the field. If they sustain career-ending injuries, there?s no guarantee they?ll keep their scholarships. Nor are scholarships transferable if they don?t like the school or sports program.

And this is what gives me the most concern about the quest for athletic scholarships: If a student is at a school that isn?t a good fit, or playing for a coach who?s more concerned about his win-loss record than the cartilage in his point guard?s knees, a scholarship is anything but a free ride to school.

If that student isn?t good enough to play professionally, he could be paying intellectually and literally the rest of his life, particularly if the scholarship didn?t cover all the costs of college.

Even if these student-athletes who don?t make the pros still love their sports enough to work in a related field, there simply aren?t all that many jobs out there. Counting coaches, umpires, and related workers along with the athletes, the U.S. Labor Department reports there were only 212,000 people who made a living this way in 2004, earning a median $48,310. While that?s not a bad income at all, there are more than twice as many doctors, earning a good deal more.

This probably isn?t quite what parents dreaming of athletic scholarships hoped for, but it is the reality.

Living the dream
That said, for the student who does have the talent, a scholarship can be a great thing.

Lindsay Ward, a star gymnast at Boise State, is thriving with hers.

Without the help, her mom would have had to take out loans to pay for Lindsay?s college, because her income and her ex-husband?s income bumped Lindsay out of the financial aid pool (even though the former husband hasn?t helped support Lindsay since 1999, says her mom, Chris Ward).

Still, there was never any grand plan that Lindsay would go for a college scholarship. Lindsay didn?t even start gymnastics until she was nine years old and her ballet teacher died suddenly.

Without her beloved teacher, she lost enthusiasm for ballet and took gymnastics just for fun. She was a natural and was put on the team immediately. Within a year, she?d dropped ballet altogether, though that early training ?was the best thing she could have ever done for gymnastics,? says Ward.

Ward was careful not to act like a coach. It helped that she knew nothing about gymnastics, she jokes.

?You can?t push them, or they?ll burn out,? she adds. ?They give up so much of their time to do gymnastics?. My daughter didn?t go to football games or date. She worked out six days a week, four to five hours a day for her four years of high school,? even during vacations.

She was an outstanding student, graduating with a 4.2 GPA. She also worked hard to get the scholarship, making videos, taking still photos that showed her form, and sending out letters of introduction.

All that hard work was also good practice, as Lindsay is majoring in biochemistry, which means she could someday be a brain surgeon, if she wanted.

It was also hard work for Lindsay?s mom, who missed only one gymnastics meet (she was throwing up at the time).

?I figured if she could work that hard, I could take the time to be there,? Ward says. ?These times were some of the best ? in my life and have made me very close to my daughter. I will always remember them.?

Something tells me that experience can be worth as much as or more than the college scholarship, and better yet?it?s in every parent?s reach.

Mobile BYOD Security Can't Be Ignored | Business Computing World

Recent research from BT into BYOD policies revealed that although over four in five companies say they already allow BYOD or will do within the next 24 months, there are still significant security concerns, placing BYOD in the same threat league as cyber-security when it comes to corporate network risk.

It is one thing for employees to want to access organisational resources from within the corporate infrastructure ? the real problems come when it comes to integrating a BYOD policy with a cloud-based infrastructure. Given that both cloud and BYOD are here to stay, is it time for CIOs to start bringing cloud-based applications and BYOD together?

Although there is a risk looking at implementing both cloud and BYOD at the same time, it could also be argued that implementing an effective BYOD strategy without a cloud-based architecture is too costly. It seems that a truly effective BYOD model needs to be tightly integrated with a cloud-based architecture.

Of course these cloud solutions differ from the lighter cloud model where users interact with web based applications such as Google Docs to a virtual desktop model where they login to a portal and all share ?nailed down? applications and workspaces. Each of these models differs greatly in cost, support and security however both avenues should still lead to reduced total cost of ownership per employee.

Allowing a multitude of devices onto the corporate network obviously increases the risk of attack on the infrastructure, widening the loopholes available for attackers. It is often argued that CIOs would be better of catering only for a handful of the most popular devices, but although there is much to be said for reduced platform size, one aspect which should not be overlooked is the fact that these devices belong to the employees and traditional ?rules? and mandates for enforcing new updates may not simply work.

IT managers however should be able to address many of the obvious vulnerabilities through application tunnels, black-listing, whitelisting, and dynamic context-aware policies. This will of course be done along with blocking of rogue devices, unauthorised users, and non-compliant applications. Corporate governance and security frameworks however will be severely tested as employees leave along with sensitive enterprise data on their mobile devices.

Although device diversity can be an issue, with the possibility that cloud apps are unable to cope the demands of many differing OSs, mobile device management can help address this. One of the simplest methods is by only providing applications for platforms that the company wish to encourage. Should a company fear the widespread use of ?rooted? android devices and their associated security vulnerabilities, then they can attempt to steers employees to Blackberry or iOS applications for instance.

Mobile device management can deliver on manageability, maintenance and governance aspects for mobile applications and the mobile infrastructure landscape. It can also help with the major problem of lost devices and subsequently lost corporate data. An effective policy and prior education will ensure that the company can wipe the lost device without fears of a lawsuit. Of course, the company has to be informed that the device is lost.

This issue alone will give many IT managers nightmares. Mobile device management can also assist in the necessary review of the regulatory, industry, and corporate policies to which an organisation is beholden such as HIPAA or guidelines such as from the SEC. It is crucial that the corporation?s mobile strategy supports current compliance controls.

IT security is often said to be a blend of people, process, and technology ? a combination which is critical when considering BYOD. Educating users is crucial ? there has to be clear messages from management as to which applications are to be avoided?and ?why?. Educate the employees as to why the organisation feels it is a threat. It may also be wise to implement a tiered access level to cloud services/applications across the organisation so as to only allow access on an ?as needed basis?.

Mobile BYOD security is unchartered territory for IT professionals, though with an anticipated explosion in the number of smartphones and tablets used by employees in the next few years, it?s not an issue they can afford to ignore.

5 Benefits Of Goal Setting

5 Benefits Of Goal Setting

Are you one of those people who struggle to see the benefits of goal setting? After all if you have something you want to achieve ? why should you think any further than that? Why not just get on with it? If that works for you that?s great but certainly many of the people who are successful in all sorts of areas in life, don?t just leave things to chance. They set goals and work out what they need to do to achieve them. So here are 5 benefits of goal setting.

1. Provides a focus

One of the effects of not setting goals is that things people often describe as goals are no more than wishes and that?s exactly how they stay. One of the benefits of goal setting is that it provides a focus and a framework to set out exactly what you want to achieve in the short, medium and long term.

2. Forces you to set priorities

Many people are guilty of making plans for themselves whilst forgetting to think about their priorities. If you take the time to set goals properly you will go through the process of deciding how to prioritise your different activities. It will also help you to decide what you may have to sacrifice and stop doing at altogether or tasks that you may have to delegate to other people.

3. Forces you to take ownership

Have you noticed how often people blame someone else for not attempting or achieving a goal? I have friends who regularly say ?I can?t because of the children? ? even when the children have long since left home. Setting goals helps you to take ownership of exactly what it is that you want to achieve.

4. Provides an opportunity to learn from past successes

It?s not healthy to live constantly in the past, particularly if it means that you?re stuck and find it difficult to move on and make desired changes in your life. However, the past can be of great benefit to you when goal setting, because you can draw on past experience and successes and use that knowledge in the present to grow and achieve.

5. Makes you aware of skills and knowledge gaps

One of the reasons why people often fail to set goals is that they lack the skills or knowledge to actually achieve some of their goals and so they get disheartened and don?t even start. One of the benefits to goal setting is that you can properly identify what you need to learn or skills that you need to acquire and plan it in.

Summary

These are just 5 benefits to goal setting. You can find further examples at my website. Even if you remain sceptical or unsure about the benefits of goal setting and you really don?t make them ? ask yourself if you?re achieving all the things in your life that you would like to. And if the answer is no ? why not investigate some of the benefits and learn just how much difference setting clear goals could make to your future.

Alaska mystery: FBI mum on Coast Guard killings

By Jim Gold, msnbc.com

It's been six weeks since two men were shot to death inside a Coast Guard communications station in Kodiak, Alaska, and investigators still are saying very little except that they don?t believe islanders are in danger.

Some residents are left to wonder if a killer is roaming their archipelago?about 250 miles southwest of Anchorage.

The FBI leads the investigation into the April 12 shooting deaths of Richard Belisle, 51, and Petty Officer 1st Class James Hopkins, 41.

No one has been named a suspect or person of interest in the case, Anchorage-based FBI Special Agent Eric Gonzales told msnbc.com.

FBI.gov

The FBI, investigating a double homicide at the Kodiak, Alaska, Coast Guard station, asked the public if anyone had seen this white 2002 Dodge Ram pick-up truck and a blue 2001 Honda CR-V.

?There is an expectation of solving this double-homicide,? Gonzales said. ?That?s what we?re all striving for, but I can?t give you a timeline.?

Kodiak Police Chief T.C. Kamai told msnbc.com that residents?need to be patient and confident that federal authorities will solve the case and answer questions the violence raised.

"People are anxious for some sort of resolution," Kamai said.

Kodiak, a city of 6,100 on the island that is?home port to 770 comercial fishing vessels, has a relatively low violent crime rate so a?double-homicide is "huge," he said.

However,?"the town is safe" with no uptick in crime "leading up to or subsequent to" the?murders, Kamai said.????

Three times, authorities have reached out to the public for help the investigation.

On April 20, the FBI asked if anyone had seen two vehicles, a white 2002 Dodge Ram pick-up truck and a blue 2001 Honda CR-V.

The FBI asked the public if anyone had seen a this blue 2001 Honda CR-V and a white 2002 Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Vehicles matching the descriptions belong to James and Nancy Wells of Bell Flats, a Kodiak Island town about 12 miles from downtown Kodiak, NBC station KTUU reported.

James Wells, a civilian rigger who worked alongside Belisle and Hopkins repairing antennas, told KTUU ?It?s our policy not to talk to anybody.?

The FBI searched the couple?s property, KTUU said.

Gonzales said he could not comment if the cars involved belonged to Wells and his wife or if their home was searched.

KTUU said one witness told it the cars were seen at the parking lot of a Comfort Inn near the Coast Guard station. The motel?s guest list was subpoenaed by the FBI, KTUU said.

On May 2, the Coast Guard, working with the FBI, asked for volunteers to search the station beyond the crime scene.

Gonzales told msnbc.com he could not say if any items turned up by the 120 searchers had any value for the investigation.

Radio station KMXT at the time said the search did not produce any results, KTUU reported.

On May 15, the FBI asked to talk to anyone in Alaska who sold, traded, or otherwise transferred any of these .44 Magnum revolvers in the past year: Smith and Wesson Model 29, Smith and Wesson Model 629, or any Taurus model in that caliber.

Some residents around Kodiak?take the investigation in stride. Others are wary.

?You?re just wondering, ?Where are the answers? Is this guy still on the loose? Are we still safe in our home??? Diane Descloux, a longtime Kodiak resident, told KTUU.

?You know it's a big wild place and things happen,? Kodiak resident Andrew Field told KTUU.
