Morocco: Are we living an economic crisis or a crisis of moral values ...

By Larbi Arbaoui

Morocco World News

Tinjedad, Morocco, July 31, 2012

The word crisis generally brings to mind an incident or situation involving a threat to the well being of the economy or the financial instability of a country, a state or a family. The word is hardly associated with a decline in morals of a certain community and the absence of honesty and mutual trust among the individuals of modern societies.

The whole world is in restless talk, and debates are taking place everywhere over the economic crisis that has recently affected even the strongest economy of the world and left the gurus of economy in desperate helplessness. The passive consumption of mass media has reduced the meaning of crisis to a stereotyped understanding of the word as a mere economic disharmony while the word is more than a bank bankruptcy. Are we witnessing the crisis of morals, or instead is it more accurate to say we are witnessing a crisis from the lack of them?

In this attempt to reflect upon our contemporary morals, I am not going to talk about the demoralizing effects of modern society in a religious perspective. Admitting that the current crisis of moral values is the result of the renouncing of religious teachings and guidelines may lead us to think of a religious approach as a definite and ultimate solution to the disease of the modern world. I and many others may go for this argument, but I believe that the complexities of the contemporary world and the social vices are too complicated to be reformed by means of preaching and religious intimidation.

Given the number of factors that come into play, preserving and transmitting moral values to the younger generation is too challenging without a comprehensive and conclusive approach.

The current crisis of our time is a crisis of values. To put it in the right sense, we are living the triumph of those values held before the crisis. In Morocco, we live in the wreckage of a slow deconstruction of values that began only recently. Bribery, fraudulence, social hypocrisy, deceit, to name a few, that used to be in our fathers? days exceptionally shameful acts of decadence are nowadays manifestations of a good character and a true gentleman.

Everything is turned upside down! The wrong doers and fraudulent people in our society are idealized and are given a higher social status instead of being denounced openly. Out of ignorance, they have become aspired social models that the majority is blindly longing to befriend and imitate. The decline of values is what drove the German philosopher Nietzsche in the nineteen century to call for the trans-valuation or the reversal of values, accusing Christian morality to be a decadent ideology.

I don?t think we need to borrow new values, nor do we need to renovate them. It would be sufficient to retrospect into the traditional repertoire of highly appreciated moral values in our culture to observe how desperately we need some of the manners of our ancestors. I am not a reactionary, but rather a person who looks back in pride to those days of glory, the days when moral values accounts more than money or fame. The insightful rhyme of Ahmad Shawqi, the Arab prince of poets, which may be translated as the following, should be our guide: ?Nations thrive as long as their morals do, when virtues die nations do.? Those words indeed have a seed of wisdom, and we are seeing just how true it is with each new headline on TV.

Taylor Kitsch and Brendan Gleeson Starring in Le Grande Seduction Remake

After the double punch of John Carter and Battleship?s disappointments (not to mention the relatively quiet US?box office take for Savages), Taylor Kitsch is looking to change things up for the future and tackle something with a little smaller. He and Brendan Gleeson are jumping aboard Canadian director Don McKellar?s next film, The Grand Seduction.

A remake of 2003 French comedy drama Le Grande Seduction, the film is set in a small harbour town that needs to lock in a doctor so that it can become the site of a much-needed new factory. Gleeson?s character will be the man charged with tracking down the right medical sort (we assume that will be Kitsch) and he will then work with the whole town to convince his target to stay.

With a script written by Michael Dowse and the original film?s scribe Ken Scott, McKellar has also rounded up a cast including Gordon Pinsent, Mary Walsh, Cathy Jones and Liane Balaban. The film is shooting right now in Newfoundland.

Weight reduction, diet, exercise and behavioral therapy advised / strength of the recommendation varies

On 10th July 2012, the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) published the results of a literature search for evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of obesity in type 2 diabetes. The aim of the report was to identify those recommendations from current guidelines of high methodological quality that may be relevant for a possible new obesity module in the disease management programme (DMP) for type 2 diabetes.

Diet, exercise and behavioural therapy generally advised

IQWiG found that the recommendations of the various guidelines for the treatment of people with type 2 diabetes who are also grossly overweight were more or less consistent: in general, alongside weight reduction, diet, exercise and behavioural therapy were also advised. Above a certain Body Mass Index (BMI), some guidelines also mention drugs to aid weight reduction (BMI ? 27 kg/m) or surgery - for example a gastric bypass (BMI ? 35 kg/m) - as a treatment option. However, the strength of the recommendation, i.e. whether the particular intervention "could", "should" or "must" be used, varies between the individual guidelines. The level of evidence, i.e. the extent to which the recommendations are backed up by results from studies, also differs.

Systematic reviews do not report patient-relevant outcomes

In accordance with the commission received from the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), the Institute searched for and evaluated systematic reviews, as well as guidelines. The aim was to compare the recommendations of the guidelines with the conclusions of the reviews, i.e. the scientific evidence from studies. However, IQWiG was unable to identify any reviews that were based on the results of studies of high methodological quality and summarized the relevant results for the treatment of people who suffered from both type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Furthermore, the systematic reviews reported largely metabolic parameters, but no patient-relevant outcomes such as blindness or amputation. This means that the conclusions in the guidelines are, for the most part, not supported by evidence from systematic reviews.

Procedure of report production

IQWiG published the preliminary results in the form of the preliminary report in October 2011 and interested parties were invited to submit comments. When the commenting procedure ended, the preliminary report was revised and sent as a final report to the contracting agency, the Federal Joint Committee, in May 2012. The written comments are published in a separate document at the same time as the final report. The report was produced in collaboration with external experts.

Former 'Idol' Kimberley Locke wants judge's chair

NEW YORK (AP) ? Kimberley Locke wants to fill that vacant judge's chair on American Idol. The season 2 finalist feels having a former contestant on the show can bring renewed interest to the popular TV singing competition.

"I would love to sit in that chair and, you know, give some advice from the contestant's standpoint because I've been on that stage and I know what it's like," Locke said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press.

But don't consider her a pushover. Locke says she'll be brutally honest about each performance and "give it with no fluff."

"When you're a contestant on that show you do need that hard truth sometimes," Locke says, anticipating her critical tone would fall somewhere between the styles of two former judges.

"I'm not quite as nice as Paula (Abdul). Paula's super, super nice but I don't think I'm quite as mean as Simon (Cowell) either."

The empty judges' chairs came after Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez decided not to come back for another season. Last week, Mariah Carey confirmed she would join the show's 12th season. Other names mentioned to fill the missing spot include Nick Jonas, Pharrell Williams and Charlie Sheen.

Regardless of if Locke were to get the call, she loves the idea of former contestants coming back to judge. Adam Lambert has also been vocal about his willingness to be a judge on "Idol."

Since finishing behind Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken at the end of the show's second season, Locke embarked on a solo career, releasing two albums on Curb Records. Locke recently started her own label, IAM Entertainment. Her first single, "Finally Free" came out on Tuesday. She plans to release another single this year and a full album early next year.

Some people say that every assignment starts from an idea, glad to disappoint you, everything starts from a cup of hot black coffee. Do you remember the movie Coffee and Cigarettes? People were sitting in a cafe and were having small talks diluted with hot black liquid. Same thing with us, copywriters ? no talks, no works until the liven energy of this substance enters our guts. For my part, any type of copywriter work is associated with specific recipe of this drink. Feels like I?m a text-writing-coffee-junkie.

Scranton, Penn. to pay back workers' wages, plus interest

(Reuters) - After slashing public employees' pay to minimum wage on July 6, the mayor of cash-poor Scranton, Pennsylvania, has struck a deal to pay them back what they are owed with interest.

Mayor Christopher Doherty agreed that the city would pay approximately $750,000 in compensation owed to firefighters, police officers and public works employees, plus at least $5,100 in interest, said Tom Jennings, a lawyer for the employees' unions.

In exchange, the unions said they would drop their bid to have the mayor held in contempt of court, according to the agreement, reached Saturday and presented to a judge on Monday.

Scranton, the setting for "The Office" television show, is one of several cities in Pennsylvania and across the United States that are struggling to make ends meet, because of lowered revenue collections and increased spending.

Doherty made headlines around the world after cutting employees' pay to the state's $7.25 minimum wage for the July 6 payroll period.

A local judge had ordered Doherty not to make the cut, but he did so anyway, prompting unions to push the court to have Doherty held in contempt.

SCRANTON RESUMED FULL PAYROLL

Doherty did not immediately reply to a request for comment about the settlement. Shortly after he cut the employees' pay, Doherty said he had no other choice because the city didn't have enough money to make full payroll of about $1.1 million for its nearly 400 employees.

After paying them about $315,000 altogether at the minimum wage, the city had just $5,000 left in its coffers, he has said.

For the following payroll on July 20, the city was again able to pay the full amount due to employees under collective bargaining agreements.

The settlement calls for Scranton to repay the compensation by August 16, plus a 6 percent interest payment that amounts to at least $5,100 for the missed pay periods.

Scranton, nicknamed the "Electric City" for having one of the nation's first electric streetcar systems, will get $2.25 million in state aid if it can enact a plan by August 15.

If it doesn't meet that goal, Scranton can extend reimbursement of the back-pay until August 31 but must pay nearly $7,000 in interest instead, the agreement said.

Scranton officials have said they can't guarantee that they won't again slash pay if the city runs low on cash.

"Hopefully gives us some stability here and some assurances that this isn't going to happen again," said John Judge, president of Scranton's firefighters' union. "I'm still cautious."

The court injunction that bars the mayor from slashing wages is still in effect, he said.

Where the soybeans meet the road

1 hr.

Those car tires you kick someday may be made from soybeans.

Goodyear is working on tires made at least partially of soybean oil instead of petroleum-based oil. ?In addition to reducing Goodyear's petroleum consumption for tires, soy-oil tires have longer tread life and may reduce Goodyear factories' energy use, the company said.

Goodyear researchers have found the treads on the new tires last 10 percent longer. The tires require less energy to make at the factory because soy-made rubber blends more readily into the tire.?

A synthetic rubber tire contains about 5 gallons of petroleum-based oil,? according to the Rubber Manufacturers Assocation, but Goodyear doesn't say how much of that will get replaced by soybean oil. The company does say it thinks the new tires may reduce its petroleum consumption by as much as 7 million gallons a year. That's about as much petroleum as 8,000 American drivers might use in a year, as calculated from data from the? Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the? Argonne National Laboratory ?and the? U.S. Department of Transportation.?

Goodyear is now building prototypes and testing them. The final product may show up in stores as early as 2015.

The Goodyear research is partially funded by the United Soybean Board, which is contributing $500,000 over two years.?

Apple says Samsung patent royalty demands unfair

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc said Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is demanding from the iPhone maker a far higher patent royalty than Apple pays to other companies, at a rate the South Korean company has never sought from any other licensee.

The information was contained in portions of an Apple legal brief freshly unsealed in U.S. court on Wednesday, and provides more detail about each side's negotiating position in the run-up to a high stakes trial set to begin next week. In a separate filing, Samsung contended that its royalty demands are consistent with industry norms.

Also on Wednesday, a U.S. magistrate in San Jose, California, ruled that Samsung wrongly let employees delete emails that could have helped Apple pursue its $2.53 billion lawsuit over disputed patents. The magistrate, Judge Paul Grewal, also said that a jury may hold it against the South Korean company.

A Samsung spokesman could not immediately comment on the ruling.

A trial is scheduled to start in the San Jose federal court July 30.

Apple and Samsung, the world's largest consumer electronics corporations, are waging legal war around the world, accusing each other of patent violations as they vie for supremacy in a fast-growing market for mobile devices.

One of the key issues in dispute between the companies is how to value Samsung's standard essential patents. These are patents which Samsung has agreed to license to competitors on fair and reasonable terms, in exchange for having the technology be adopted as an industry standard.

Some judges are reluctant to issue injunctions on such patents.

Samsung is demanding a 2.4 percent rate on the "entire selling price" of Apple's mobile products, Apple said in the court filing.

"Samsung's royalty demands are multiple times more than Apple has paid any other patentees for licenses to their declared-essential patent portfolios," Apple said.

The legal filings do not disclose the rate Apple pays to other companies for standard essential patents. In a court filing on Tuesday, Apple had said it should pay one-half of 1 cent per unit for each infringed standard essential patent.

However, Samsung said in a separate filing on Wednesday that its offer "is consistent with the royalty rates other companies charge" and that Apple never made a counter offer.

"Instead, it simply rejected Samsung's opening offer, refused to negotiate further and to this day has not paid Samsung a dime for Apple?s use of Samsung's standards-essential technology," Samsung said.

In his ruling, Judge Grewal said Samsung "acted with conscious disregard of its obligations, or willfully" in failing to disable the "auto-delete" feature of its in-house "mySingle" email system by the time it should have known that Apple would sue over patents for technology used in smartphones and tablets.

"In effect, Samsung kept the shredder on," Grewal wrote. "This plan fell woefully short of the mark."

Grewal ordered that a jury be instructed that it may presume that it is more likely than not that Samsung destroyed evidence favorable to Apple after its duty to preserve that evidence had started.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, 11-1846.

War Horse's Jeremy Irvine Will Spend A Night In Old Mexico With Robert Duvall

Road movies are a time-tested (and borderline tired) genre. The travelers may change, but the destination largely stays the same from movie to movie. Casting Robert Duvall in a road-trip movie, however, is going to pique our interest, and pairing him with Jeremy Irvine ? of Steven Spielberg?s War Horse -- only helps matters.

The two actors will team for A Night in Old Mexico, the second film from Spanish director Emilio Aragon, who made his feature-length directorial debut with 2010?s Paper Birds. Variety says that the plot of Old Mexico, working off of a Bill Wittliff (Legends of the Fall) screenplay, follows the relationship that develops between a man (Duvall) and his grandson (Irvine). But the trade promises a combination of action, tragedy and romance, so hopefully the scope of the film is larger than what we might normally expect from a road movie.

Which is totally possible. Aragon comes from a creative Spanish family, and has dabbled in acting, composition and directing. He?s a multi-faceted artist who made decent box office with Paper Birds, even collecting a few key awards (including the audience award at the 37th Seattle film fest). The movie begins filming in days, and shooting will run through August. Expect to see it in theaters sometime in 2013. Duvall, in the meantime, can next be seen in the Tom Cruise actioner Jack Reacher, while Irvine plays Pip in Mike Newell?s adaptation of the Dickens classic Great Expectations. That production, due out later this year, also stars Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter, so be on the lookout.

The detachment to everything was unreal i feel no fear of dying after that experience but i will never do it again smoking incense feels like ice shades on the lungs and this was after a little bucket some drinks and then racehorse joints so a night of it and was smart enough to figure out who would do this everyday, Well it's more common then most think it's legal and people that work use it to get around the drug testing this world is really f@7ked up and is anti-intelligant life.

Yeah that stuffs nasty, I never even bothered trying it....I understand some people use it if they have to pass drug tests for being on probation or maybe if they have to pass a drug test for a job. But it would be better if they'd look into other plants that have a relaxing effect(though not all of them can be smoked), there are quite a few legal herbs that can be used as alternatives(just look on erowid.org) and its safer than the false cannabis.
