Homes from 'Rocky' and legendary sports movies

By Erika Riggs, Zillow

?Many sports movie scenes take place on a field, in a dugout, post game in a locker room or coach's office. But in between great plays and dramatic scores, many of the films feature shots of houses as well.

From the gritty house featured in "The Fighter" to the classic 1950s rambler in "The Sandlot," here's a real estate tour through sports films.

"Rocky"

YouTube

Usually near the top of any list of greatest sports films, "Rocky" garnered a devoted following, three Oscars and five sequels. Rocky Balboa's apartment in an urban Philadelphia building was an iconic part of the first film.

Google

Rocky's apartment still stands in Philly.

Located at 1818 E Tusculum St., Philadelphia,?seen above, the brick building showcased iconic scenes between the boxer and his girlfriend, Adrian, as well as his manager, Mickey. Built in 1920, the residence today is listed as a three-bedroom, one-bath condo measuring 754 square feet.

"The Sandlot"

Scotty Smalls, in the movie runs toward the house.

The classic children's film "The Sandlot" documents the summertime antics of a neighborhood's ragtag baseball team. Set in the 1960s, most of the 1993 film takes place in the empty lot where the boys play baseball, but one character's classic rambler home is briefly spotted.

Zillow

The home featured in "The Sandlot" looks much like it did in the '60s.

Built in 1956, the home at 1556 S 2000 E, Salt Lake City, pictured above, was last sold in 2009 in near original condition. Complete with green shag carpet, leaded-glass diamond-pane windows, beamed ceiling and brass light fixtures, the home looks just as it did 1960. The four-bedroom, three-bath Salt Lake City home sits on a quarter-acre lot and has 1,632 square feet of living space.

"A League of Their Own"

YouTube

Tom Hanks stands in front of the home in the movie "A League of Their Own."

Starring film heavyweights like Tom Hanks and Geena Davis, and featuring Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna, "A League of Their Own" showcased the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was established to keep baseball in the public's eye while men were overseas during World War II.

Zillow

The enormous Kentucky home served as a boarding house in the film "A League of Their Own."

Much of the film takes place on the field, but a large, Victorian-era home, above, gets its fair share of screen time toward the end of the movie as the setting for the boarding house. The Henderson, Ky., home was recently listed for sale in 2011 for $799,000. The listing was removed in May 2012. With nine fireplaces, three stories, full basement and five bedrooms, the house at 612 N Main St, Henderson?was more than roomy enough to host the movie's baseball team.

"The Fighter"

Zillow

Christian Bale, playing Dicky Eklund, walks toward the green home in the movie "The Fighter."

Like "Rocky," "The Fighter" was an Oscar-winning film that showcased an underdog boxer. Starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, the docudrama told the story of real-life boxer Micky Ward and his older half-brother Dicky Eklund.

Zillow

The home feature in "The Fighter" is still a bright shade of green.

Once a boxing contender himself, Eklund lives in the house shown above in Lowell, Mass. The home stands at 28 Smith St, Lowell?and is painted same green shade as it was in the film. The three-bedroom, one-bath home was built in 1900.

"Field of Dreams"

Source: Fox Pictures

A scene from "Field of Dreams."

The white, clapboard farmhouse and baseball field used in the much-loved 1989 movie "Field of Dreams" continues to attract upward of 60,000 visitors each year. So it comes as no surprise that new buyers of the "Field of Dreams" site are reportedly going to develop a portion of the 193-acre farm into "All-Star Ballpark Heaven," a 24-field baseball and softball tournament facility.

Zillow

The clapboard farmhouse featured heavily in the film "Field of Dreams."

Olympians, Clint help Republicans party night away

The dancing started long before Mitt Romney took the stage, as jubilant Republicans launched a premature celebration, hoping they had picked the right man to oust Barack Obama from the White House in November.

The crowd was clearly in a party mood: Some waving American flags, or wearing red, white and blue sequins, others sporting cowboy hats as they cavorted in the cavernous red, white and blue festooned hall.

Gone for the moment were questions over Romney's conservative credentials and doubts that as a Mormon he might not be acceptable or electable.

For the crowd of more than 4,000 delegates in the cavernous convention center, amid the frenzied chanting and cheering, there was one clear conviction: the millionaire businessman and former Massachusetts governor was their man.

"I've been on the bandwagon for a long time. As much as the media wants to portray him as this job slasher and life ruiner, everything he touches turns to gold. Everything he touches," Jeremy Litster, a delegate from Idaho, told AFP.

"If I could bring him into my company as CEO, I would bring him in tomorrow. I think every company in America would do that. So why not bring him in as president?" he said at the packed convention center in Tampa, Florida.

Helping elevate the crowd's spirits and set feet moving were musical interludes that reflected the candidate's taste, culled from the pop and soft rock playlists from the 70s and 80s and interpreted by an ensemble of blue-eyed soul musicians.

Romney arrived at the Tampa Bay Times Forum at 9:22 pm (0122 GMT Friday), remaining backstage for around 40 minutes until it was time for him to deliver the biggest speech of his political life.

During easily the most spirited evening of the three-day convention, the crowd became more and more worked up as the program progressed towards its heady climax.

For many, a high point was Hollywood actor and director Clint Eastwood, who obliged the crowd with a recitation of his signature line from hit film "Dirty Harry" -- which they actually finished for him "Go ahead, make my day!"

He followed a group of American Olympians, whose presence was designed to remind voters that the candidate had saved the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City from financial ruin.

For Kristen Vander-Plas, from Lubbock Texas, celebrating Romney's ascension meant going home from the last day of the convention with a cherished souvenir -- the signature of 23 of her Republican heroes on her white straw cowboy hat.

The 24-year-old delegate collected signatures from the likes of Texas Governor Rick Perry, former senator Rick Santorum -- the runner-up to Romney in the Republican primary campaign -- and former White House advisor Karl Rove.

"I saw (congresswoman) Michele Bachmann so I just stuck a (magic marker pen) in her hand and she did it, and it's kind of ballooned from there," she explained to AFP.

On the floor of the convention, she waived her hat at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and he too obliged.

As the moment approached when Romney was due to take the stage, the crowd seemed barely able to contain its anticipation.

Litster knew exactly what he wanted to hear from Romney, after four years under a Democratic leader praised for his cool likability.

"I'm hoping to hear, 'I'm a rock star.' I wish he would get up there and say 'I'm a rock star, I'm a badass. I can fix this thing'," he said.

He quickly added that he knew the rock star thing was not Romney's style.

"He won't -- he's too conservative to say that. I wish he would. I hope he can brag about himself a little bit. Because he's awesome," Litster said.

"If you really read about him and get rid of the liberal bias that he flip-flops or this or that, he's really awesome," he said.

Romney finally took the stage after a barnstorming introduction by party rising star Marco Rubio, entering the hall to several minutes of cheering and thunderous applause.

The speech was interrupted briefly by three protesters, two women and one man.

"Democracy is not a business!" one of them chanted. "We need to put people over profits!" Delegates immediately started chanting "USA! USA!" to drown them out before they were removed by security officers.

After Romney wrapped up his speech, a crucial prime-time pitch to American voters he hopes will drive momentum for his ticket ahead of the November election, the patriotic anthem "America the Beautiful" was sung.

Then? Time for the after-party.

Against a backdrop screen of fireworks and a massive photo of the candidate and his wife, most of the Romney clan -- the couple have five sons and 18 grandchildren -- took to the stage, balloons filling the air as the James Brown classic "Living in America" rounded out the night.

An Online Fantasy Football Gambling Site Is Using An Impersonator To Make You Think Jim Rome Is A Spokesperson

An Online Fantasy Football Gambling Site Is Using An Impersonator To Make You Think Jim Rome Is A Spokesperson When your company's website features a prominent "Is This Legal?" link on its homepage, it's probably in an industry engaging in some kind of questionable behavior. But there it is on the front page of fantasy football gambling site FanDuel, in which we're told that yes, it is legal (in 44 of the 50 states).

Hey, if you're enough of a degenerate gambler to spend your money playing fantasy sports and funnel your money through another company rather than share it with your friends, that's your prerogative. But it's especially sketchy how FanDuel advertises: with a sports-talk radio ad impersonating Jim Rome, running in some cases during Rome's radio show itself.

You can listen to the ad above. It's clearly intended to mislead listeners into thinking it's a) not an advertisement (it opens with "Okay, we're back") and b) being read by Jim Rome. While the impersonator is a relatively crappy one, he uses Rome's characteristic pacing and catchphrases.

Maybe Rome authorized the impersonation, but he's never had a problem voicing ads for any other of his sponsors, so we're guessing this is happening without his approval. And that approval would be necessary, at least as reflected by the law (this is why most radio ads featuring a celebrity impersonator feature the words "Celebrity impersonated" at the end). It's called the right of publicity, and it got Ford Motor Company smacked down by the courts in 1988 when they tried to use a Bette Midler voice impersonator to sell cars. This is the same thing, but even more devious?they're not only implying it's a celebrity endorsement, but that it's happening during programming, not a stopset/ad break.

In the end, is this really any worse than the penis-lengthening snake oil ads that run in heavy rotation on those same sports talk stations? Not really.

Ahoy there Anglers,

Tuesday evening, October 9, 2012 is our next Recreational Fishing Alliance Rally. This is a date that all anglers need to remember. If you fish you need to be there!

If you want to continue fishing in the future you need to be there! EVEN IF you have only fished a time or two in the past year YOU need to be there! Sneakers Sports Grill, 8133 Point Meadows Drive, Jax. 32256 which is right at Baymeadows Road and 9-A X-way. Meet at 6:30pm and Rally starts at 7:00pm.

Special Guest Speaker:

CONGRESSMAN ANDER CRENSHAW and our National Director Jim Donofrio will also be here for the rally as well as myself. A membership table will be set up if you would like to become an RFA Member, ($35) and not only fight for your right to fish but fight for your right to keep fish also. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and numerous prize drawings. If you remember at our last RFA Rally we gave away over $4,000.00 worth of prizes. Listen on our Still Just Fishing radio show Saturday mornings from 6am to 8am on AM600 WBOB with Capt. Mike Darveau and Capt. Roger Bump and myself for updates. Please share this invite with all your friends and lets make this a record rally! All anglers need all the help we can get to help keep our right to fish. With over 200,000 anglers in this City and surrounding areas I can see why the Feds and Enviro-nuts are really speaking out louder than the anglers. They want us stopped and off the water and are telling the Federal Government that fishing needs to be stopped.

Anglers haven't been sticking together in the past and we need you more now than ever before. Let Congressman Crenshaw see that we're not going to lay down and just take the abuse any longer. Help pack the house on our RFA Rally. Bring all your fishing buddies, fishing ladies and kids to this big event. We are just as important as the Enviro-nuts and we make more sense than they do.

This article just came out:

The Obama administration is considering new environmental rules that would, in effect ban recreational fishing in the United States, according to ESPN. This move is apparently being contemplated under pressure from environmental groups. "The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing the nation's oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters. "This announcement comes at the time when the situation supposedly still is "fluid" and the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force still hasn't issued its final report on zoning uses of these waters. "That's a disappointment, but not really a surprise for fishing industry insiders who have negotiated for months with officials at the Council on Environmental Quality and bureaucrats on the task force. These angling advocates have come to suspect that public input into the process was a charade from the beginning." The excuse for this contemplated ban is the notion that recreational fishing as well as commercial fishing is depleting the stock of fish in American waters. This notion is disputed by fishing groups, which fear not only that a ban would prohibit Americans from pursuing a traditional form of recreation, but also devastate the industry that supports recreational fishing. Angling groups maintain that there is no basis in science for an attempt to ban recreational fishing. If the ban is ordered, it would likely come via executive order rather than an attempt to have Congress pass legislation. Various environmental groups are demanding that such an executive order be issued as soon as possible.

Don't set back and do nothing and let other anglers fight for you. If you fish you need to fight also. Join the RFA, at least be counted at our Rally. As an angler that's the least you can do.

Remember the Feds said that if they went down to 5 per person and a 13" size limit on the Sea bass in Federal waters then they would keep the season open longer and we could fish for them longer? Well, they closed them down in February the first year, October last year and September 4th this year. This is the need for our fight. NOAA keeps lying with no repercussions. Well, the RFA isn't through with them yet !

Well, we sure have quite a bit of stuff going on here lately and it's keeping the Recreational Fishing Alliance busy. Our Board of Directors are on top of what's happening here locally and throughout our State of Florida.

Suellen Clark, Aaron Scholten and I just took a road trip to Panama City for the Congressional Hearing with the House natural Resources Committee entitled, "Fishing=Jobs: How Strengthening America's Fisheries Strengthens Our Economy". It was spearheaded through the efforts of Committee Chairman Doc Hastings and Representative Steve Sutherland, (R-FL) both of whom attended.

Now, I have to tell you, the meeting went really good and the two Congressional Representatives were speaking on the angler's side. Earlier this month Rep. Southerland announced he was cosponsoring legislation called the "Transparent & Science-Based Fishery Management Act of 2012, (HR 6350) which would amend the Magnuson-Stevens Act which is what we anglers have been waiting on someone to do. Finally, we're being heard on so many levels now. You can see the actual Hearing on this web site:

fishingnewsnetwork.com and hear exactly how Rep. Sutherland and Chairman Hastings spoke up for us.

Fishing Report

On another note of interest, as many anglers have been run off from an area downtown known as the Crowley docks, we kept stating Florida Statute title XXV111, Section 379.101 and Statute # 379.105, Harassment of hunters, trappers or fishers. Captain Roger Bump, Vice Chairman of the Recreational Fishing Alliance got in touch with an attorney, Hank Holbrook, III, Esquire, and Mr. Holbrook started writing letters and contacting the U.S. Coast Guard, etc. and found out for us that there is not now nor has ever been a security zone around the Crowley docks. The security guy on that property has been running anglers off and calling the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and using their officers to run anglers off from around their docks from 100 yards to 1000 yards, whatever he decides to tell the police he wants. So, thanks to Mr. Holbrook and Capt. Roger we have a meeting set up with Crowley, U.S. Coast Guard, JSO, Mr. Holbrook and several of us anglers in September just before the next Jax. Water Ways Commission Meeting. No longer can we be run off from that area. It is a violation of Chapter 379.104, Florida Statutes to interfere with a person who is legally fishing or hunting on public waters or property. Thank you Mr. Holbrook! and Capt. Roger!

Fishing Report

CREEKS:

Redfish in the creeks have been feeding very good here lately although I did have a slow day last Friday. We've been catching reds up to 33.5" here lately in the shallow water creeks. Gotta love that ! Seeing those redfish pushing wakes and seeing a few with their backs out of the water is so exciting. I love sight casting to fish like that. A few more flounder are showing up better and better although most of them are still small but we're hearing of a few 4 to 6 pounders being caught now and then. Spotted sea trout in the creeks are hitting top waters and suspending lures and the bite seems to be better when we're having the high tides early in the mornings instead of the afternoons but that still works also. A few sheepshead from 4 to 9 pounds have been caught by my customers in the creeks and that seems to work better about 2 hours after low tide all the way up to high. Try a quartered up blue crab on a jig head.

Fishing Report

RIVERS:

Bull redfish is just one of the main things happening now in the St. Johns River. Big yellowmouth trout, some up to 5 pounds each. I haven't seen a yellowmouth trout run like this in 10 years. Plenty of them and they are nice! A few mangrove snapper are showing up this season. That's better than last year when we couldn't find them. Whiting in the river mixed in with some of the yellowmouth trout in some areas but not all of them. Loads of small croakers everywhere with a few keepers mixed in here and there. Spotted sea trout on the higher tides along rock banks and grassy shorelines. I haven't seen any drum lately but September is here and I'll be looking for them with the cooler water temperatures. I can hardly believe it but the water has already cooled about 8 degrees. So far, most of the bull reds have been between 15 to 40 pounds but we've actually had a few between 50 and 56 pounds so far this spawning season.

Fishing Report

JETTIES:

Bull redfish along with some slot-sized keepers chewing at the rocks. Big sharks are also tearing up tackle out there but get the correct size tackle, rods, reels and line and set your drag right and hold on for the fight of a lifetime when you tangle with a 8' to 10' shark. Big bull sharks, big blacktips and a few smaller nurse sharks, bonnetheads and a couple sand sharks are all so fun to catch. Want a workout? Those guys can give you one you won't forget. Tarpon are feeding mostly on the slacker current part of the turn of the tides. I saw someone catch a black drum on the inside of the South rocks the other day so maybe, just maybe with this cooler water temperatures they're starting to come in. I hope so as black drum and sheepshead season is going to be busy this year. I'm already getting bookings for October and November and I just can't wait. Some whiting on the inside and outside of the rocks in the sandier areas and yes, yellowmouth trout in the same areas. Black sea bass are still open within State waters although September 4th starts the closed season again in Federal waters. Closed until June 1, 2013. Spanish mackerel should show up almost any day now for their Southerly run.

Fishing Report

MILL COVE:

Spotted sea trout on lures is your best bet. I love the top waters, suspending and the floater/divers for the trout during the last 1.5 hours of the incoming, high and the first 1.5 hours of the outgoing tides. Redfish are hitting the same top waters in the cove during these tides also. I heard a few flounder have made their way into the Cove and people have been lucky enough to find some in there. Loads of ladyfish on the higher tides. They are so fund to catch on lures but also I like to use them as bait too and that's one reason I target them. Yellowmouth trout in the entrance of the Cove on both ends.

SURF:

I have heard a few pompano have been caught now that the water temperatures have fallen into the high 70's. Whiting are chewing and a good number of black drum have showed up in certain areas. Mostly around the pier and South into Guana. Spotted sea trout around the pier also. I see another kingfish was caught off the pier recently. Good job!

Please remember, you need the RFA so you can keep fishing and to be able to teach your kids how to fish and even your grandkids how to fish. I couldn't imagine not being able to fish or even not having my boat on the water. Why do people want to force us live like they want to live? What would they do if we wanted to force them to live like us? Be at our Rally, Tuesday, October 9th at Sneakers. Remember the sea bass?

Remember how they were going to "let us" fish longer for them? Don't be one of those anglers who lets other people fight your fight so you can sit on the couch. Be at our Rally! It's for YOU !

Aspirin study shows benefit for prostate cancer patients | KDVR.com ...

You may have heard that having aspirin on hand can prevent a heart attack from becoming deadly, but new research shows what could be another benefit.

Aspirin could cut your risk of developing certain types of cancer.

A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology looked at nearly 6,000 prostate cancer patients.

Their treatment included surgery and radiation. Just over one-third were taking aspirin for other ailments, it turned out that those patients were less than half as likely to die as a result of the disease.

Dr. Fernando Kim, Chief of Urology at Denver Health Medical Center warns that while the study offers hope, it?s not time to jump to the conclusion that aspirin can cure cancer and adds, ?This study does not show that all men. or any man, who takes aspirin who will develop cancer will benefit or increase survival.?

Dr. Kim does say that aspirin has an extraordinary track record when it comes to other health benefits, like guarding against heart problems, and the new research may lead doctors to better treatments for cancer patients.

He explains, ?We identify patients that can have aspirin in terms of cardiovascular diseases but in terms of prostate cancer we didn?t know (yet).?

The big question for many, should you begin taking aspirin in hopes of cutting your chances of developing cancer? Dr. Kim says self-prescribing aspirin is a dangerous thing to do.

Not everyone can benefit from the blood thinning effects of aspirin, especially those with ulcers or bleeding disorders.

He emphasizes, ?There is no miracle drug that can treat everyone, there are patients that are specifically well designed for aspirin use, but not everybody should be taking aspirin.?

For more information about the aspirin study you can go to http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/08/120828170725.htm

PFT: Edwards praises Wilson, takes?shot at Sanchez

NBC-Sports-Network-1-e1312231418815-1

Next week, the 2012 NFL regular season launches.? As a very, very, very (did I say very?) small footnote to that, the PFT weed will be spreading into new territory.

We?re taking the website to NBC Sports Network, with a one-hour show every weekday, at 5:00 p.m. ET.

The show, curiously dubbed Pro Football Talk, debuts on Tuesday, September 4.? Hosted by the highly competent and funny and engaging Erik Kuselias and by an Internet hack who is the exact opposite of those three traits, the show will bring the PFT temperament and attitude to the small screen, with help from NBC talent like Rodney Harrison, Hines Ward, Doug Flutie, Ross Tucker, Amani Toomer, and Peter King.

The powers-that-be tell me they?re sending out an official press release soon.? They wanted me to say something for it.? Here?s the best I could muster:? ?When we started the website, the goal was to create a place I?d want to visit as a football fan.? That same objective applies to Pro Football Talk. ?We wanted to make a show that I would spend time watching if I wasn?t involved in it.? Of course, some may say they?d be more likely to watch this show if I actually wasn?t involved in it.?

The content here won?t suffer a bit.? We?ll be tweaking the format of PFT Live so that it will be a shorter show, with less prep time, which gives me more time at the keyboard.? And we?ve put together an excellent stable of writers, from MDS to Darin Gantt to Josh Alper to Evan Silva.

Like the website, Pro Football Talk will be a creature of the moment, with the latest news you need to know, outside-the-box analysis, genuine debate, and some humor.? Not forced or phony laughs, but genuinely funny moments (hopefully) that will make you feel like you?re hanging out with a group of friends.? (Or at a minimum casual acquaintances whom you don?t hate.)

The party starts next Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. ET.? On Wednesday, I?ll be at MetLife Stadium for the show, as we get ready for the regular-season opener between the Cowboys and the Giants.

We?ll be seeking your questions and your input and your feedback; this show is for you not for us and we want to be sure we cover the subjects that you want us to cover ? and that we avoid low-hanging fruit and five-letter quarterback/punt protector/special-teams aces.

Thinking about doing something exciting, entertaining, dangerous, exhilarating, colorful and just plain fun this summer?? Well, ?August 25 ? 26, 2012, you can attend the Winston-Salem Air Show.

Air shows can vary greatly. Some are large scale military events with huge flying displays and ground exhibitions while others are held at small local airstrips and often feature just one or two hours of flying with just a few stalls on the ground. Air displays can be held during day or night, or over one or two days. Shows don?t always take place over airfields; some have been held over the grounds of stately homes or castles and over the sea at coastal resorts.

This event, however, will be held at one of Winston-Salem?s oldest airports and is one of the very best in North Carolina. Thousands of residents and visitors come to the Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem and enjoy a full day of family entertainment, and watch spectacular air displays using some of the oldest and finest aircraft.? Your children can get their faces painted, adults can view Piedmont Airlines memorabilia and air performances are sure to be absolutely incredible.

The Winston-Salem Air Show brings an array of planes from all over the country. Bring your lawn chairs, grab some food and sit and enjoy a full day of entertainment.? Be sure to visit the exhibits, get a helicopter ride, attend a concert, or get an autograph to finish up a fun-filled day.

I'm looking at upgrading and grabbing a new computer, preferably a gaming one.

I'm looking to spend a maximum of about ?800, but obviously cheaper the better. I currently have an old PC:

    • 4GB Ram
    • nVidia GeForce 8400GS
    • Quad Core @ 2.40GHz
    • 500MB HDD.

So the new PC should be better than that please
I'd prefer something with these specs:Also preferably available in the UK so I'm not paying daft prices for shipping. I'm asking on here as I know there are a lot of people who know their stuff about computers!

    Thank you

I'm not a techy with hardware, so if you're going to recommend a self-build then I'm gonna need a lot of help haha :P

    I'm gonna recommend a self-build looool

That is pretty much the best video guide to it.

Also what are you looking to do exactly with your pc, as in what kind of gaming? any specific types of games? want wi-fi? storage?, etc
want a screen, speaker, etc as well in that budget?

I would also recommend a self build but if you're too against it I'll try recommend something pre-built. It is quite easy after watching some youtube videos

Is ?800 including a monitor, windows 7, keyboard, mouse etc.?

Gaming; I mainly play simulators - Flight Sim X, Trainz 2012, Sims 3
I'm not bothered about wifi as my router is right next to my pc anyway and I'm currently using an Ethernet cable. Storage anything that's decent really. I currently have 500mb and it seems too little. 1TB+?

?800 would just be the tower. I don't want a monitor as I'm currently using my TV for everything :P I'd be happy to keep my current wireless keyboard/mouse but would be happy to buy others outside of the 800 budget.

    I wouldn't mind self-building but I'd be hopeless selecting parts etc :/

we can help with the parts, thats the whole point of this part of the forum..........what kind of games?
you already got a windows dvd?

I play quite demanding games: Flight Sim X, Trainz 2012, Sims 3. I also don't have a windows dvd but I'd probably just buy a windows 7 one off Amazon or something if it's worth it.

haven't you got one from your current computer? or a serial for it, it would be on the case on a sticker?

I've only got an Acer Recovery disc hiding somewhere in my pile of CDs.. There is a serial key but it's Vista..

You want a gaming computer to play SIMS?! SIMS?! Seriously? Sims needs very little graphical power. Unless you note an extreme lack of FPS, just upgrade your GFX. You don't need more RAM, just get yourself another 4GB stick, dirt cheap if it's DDR2.

Something like this is an absolute beast of a machine. I haven't added a case/optical drive as they're mainly personal preference.

    Re: Recommended Gaming Computer

But surely upgrading the GFX will do the job? Haha, that's scary but true, only just noticed! When I built my PC, 4GB DDR3, I paid ?82.

My PC originally came with 2x1GB ram. When I was in the process of upgrading it I read online on many pages that the max for my motherboard/pc was 2x2GB.. And I want a new pc anyway as I've had this for like 3-4 years. I'd love a stronger PC so I could play FSX etc more & better Maybe I could get San Andreas back and SA:MP

Idk if upgrading would do though for the reason I've just said hmm?

    Re: Recommended Gaming Computer

It's up to you. The only real problem you have is that your GFX could do with a bit more grunt. You can easily build a decent tower for ?500 that will play many high-end games for you. Don't bother getting a new hard drive, optical drive.

I'd probably just keep this one and wipe everything off it & start again, or get another and use both? Does that max 4GB ram sound correct though? May as well just start from scratch if I can't upgrade much. I also read that the PSU that comes with this PC is a piece of crap, and I haven't bothered upgrading it as I've noticed just how many cables there are lol.. Scary :P

oh, guessing you don't want vista than.........hmmm ok, i'll make a build for ?700 here

cpu: i5-3570 http://www.ebuyer.com/387254-intel-c...-bx80637i53570 ?164.78......... this is more than adequate, choose this version, as it doesn't look like your overclocking, but if you want to, do you want the k version?
cpu cooler: not sure if you want one, as i'm unsure about whether you'll be overclocking or want it for better temps and lower noise
motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H http://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigab...dvi-d-hdmi-atx ?77.72, best value motherboard, though limited to crossfire and not sli
    ram: 2 x 4gb lp Corsair Vengeance http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-(...9-9-24-xmp-15v ?34.99,
graphics card: 2gb 7850 Xfx http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-x...-dvi-i-hdmi-2x ?154.79, to be honest a bargain, theres a cheaper 1gb version, which im actually surprised about
    power supply: Corsair TX650 http://www.ebuyer.com/257232-corsair...mpsu-650txv2uk ?69.92
Hard drive: Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 http://www.ebuyer.com/173804-samsung...-drive-hd103sj ?65, good product, not sure if you want more?
case: Antec 300 http://www.ebuyer.com/143854-antec-3...761345-08300-3 ?39.99, if you want something better looking than ask, cos this is a very good value case

Total is ?607.19, so about ?90 left for the oem version of Windows
also just use your old optical drive if its sata or get one for ?12.99 online, and could also use your old hard drive if you want?

I'd recommend a different CPU, perhaps a K version! I know the i5 2500k had rave reviews (a bit old now!)

I'd get a K version if it's worth the money, idk about overclocking though as I wouldn't want to break anything haha :P

That looks like a decent build though. I might wait a bit though as I'm expecting to get some money within the next 2 weeks ish, idk how much it'll be but if it's a fair bit I'd increase my budget.. Unless that build is good enough?

Abington Health Named 'Most Wired' Hospital on ADVANCE for ...

ABINGTON, PA -- Abington Health was recognized as one of the nation's most wired in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine.

The nation's "most wired" hospitals are improving performance through the adoption of health information technology, according to the Most Wired 2012 Survey, which is conducted in cooperation with McKesson Corporation, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), and the American Hospital Association.

"Abington Health balances providing clinicians with anytime, anywhere access to its robust electronic medical record to facilitating safe patient care while implementing advanced security technologies to ensure our patients' privacy," said Alison Ferren, vice president of information technology and chief information officer, Abington Health. "Our nurses, physicians, information systems team members and all of our support staff are honored to receive this national recognition."

"As shown by these survey results, hospitals continue to demonstrate how IT not only can be used to improve patient care and safety but is also a means to improve efficiency," said Rich Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association. "Hospitals receiving Most Wired recognition are truly representative of our nation's hospitals and systems -- rural and urban, small and large, teaching and non-teaching, and critical access hospitals geographically dispersed."

The survey, conducted between Jan. 15 and March 15, asked hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions regarding their IT initiatives. Respondents completed 662 surveys, representing 1,570 hospitals, or roughly 27 percent of all U.S. hospitals.

The H&HN cover story is available at www.hhnmag.com.

Abington Health is the umbrella organization that encompasses Abington Memorial Hospital and Lansdale Hospital, plus two outpatient facilities. Together they serve more than 42,200 inpatients, 131,000 emergency patients and 560,000 outpatient visits annually.

Kirk Cameron defends Akin: ?I believe he?s a good man?

(NBC/Today)

In the wake of his "legitimate rape" comments, Rep. Todd Akin has found few public supporters. But Akin can count Kirk Cameron as one of them.

Cameron--star of the popular '80s sitcom "Growing Pains" turned evangelical Christian--defended the embattled Missouri Congressman on the fourth hour of the "Today" show on Tuesday.

"I'm not his political strategist, thank God," Cameron, who interviewed Akin for his new religious documentary, "Monumental," told Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford. "Clearly, this is a man who is advocating the sanctity of life through and through. He said he misspoke and he apologized for it. I like to evaluate people based on their entire life, their entire career, and (what) they stand for. He loves his wife, he's got six children. I believe he's a good man. He's now in a very, very difficult spot."

"I've sat down and and actually watched the video," Cameron added. "Watch[ed] it, not just to read some of the transcripts and the quotes."

[Related: Akin releases new campaign ad asking for 'forgiveness']

On Monday, amid a growing chorus of GOP leaders calling for Akin to halt his Senate campaign, the FRC Action PAC released a statement supporting his candidacy.

"This is another case of 'gotcha politics' against a conservative leader," FRC Action PAC president Connie Mackey said. "Todd Akin has a long and distinguished record of defending women, children and families. He has fought against forcing taxpayers to subsidize abortion giant Planned Parenthood, which is the bedrock of Claire McCaskill's base of support. When speaking about the issue of rape, let's not forget the cover-up of statutory rape by Planned Parenthood, which to my knowledge has not been addressed by Senator McCaskill.

[Also read: The story behind Kirk Cameron's sad birthday photo]

"Throughout his twelve years in Congress, Todd Akin has supported legislation that honors all human life. He has opposed the commodification of women in contrast to his opponent, Claire McCaskill, who has a long record of promoting the abortion industry while ignoring how abortion harms women."

Indoor/Outdoor Connectivity Defining Modern Family Home ...

Carey House by TT Architecture 5 Indoor/Outdoor Connectivity Defining Modern Family Home

Using building materials like steel, glass and metal cladding, Australian studio TT Architecture constructed a complex set of architectural details gathered under a simple name: Carey House. This modern family home was designed to include an extensive system of indoor-outdoor connectivity elements, admired by the owners and considered one of the best features of the house, as described by its inhabitants: ?The flow of the internal spaces and visual connection between the inside and outside spaces is outstanding.? The Australian home displays a boldness rarely seen in residential architecture.

Carey House by TT Architecture 1 Indoor/Outdoor Connectivity Defining Modern Family Home

This ?collective of elements massing themselves towards the center and being expressed as a formal interplay of planes? showcases a spectacular set of design details, proportioned volumes and playful connection of materials.?Not only are the horizontal and vertical set against each other but form strong cantilevers intending to give the sense of solid elements ?floating? over lighter ones. This floating aspect is inherent in the cantilevered decks and bay windows and the substantial roof overhangs.? Materializing into a dream home, this joining of textures, surfaces and voids were intended to become a bespoke set of spaces cradling the owner?s lifestyle with extreme attention to details. Resulting in a perfectly adapted cluster of family rooms, the Carey House displays a necessary visual connection to the surrounding landscape.
