Video: How Ford Marketed The Mustang To The Masses

The the hit AMC drama ?Mad Men? features a fictional ad agency in Manhattan that uses real-life products and marketing techniques to make the lives of advertising execs absolutely riveting. Products like the Kodak carousel slide projector and Heinz baked beans have been featured on the show, and the iconic Ford Mustang has been used as a reference setting a high standard for marketing execs everywhere.

marketing-the-mustangSo what was it about the Mustang marketing scheme that resulted in one of the most successful new car launches in American history? Ford takes a step back in history with documentary maker Cicely Gilkey with a 30-minute film titled ?Marketing the Mustang: An American Icon.? All we?ve got is a brief teaser video for now, but that?s enough to pique our interest.

It took Ford just 20 months to sell a million Mustangs, making it the fastest-selling car of all time. And thanks to its rebellious image and wide range of customization options that let young buyers purchase exactly the car they wanted. Veteran journalist and Ford Racing historian John Clor explains why the Mustang marketing campaign was so different, and so successful.

?Young people were looking for something that was the polar opposite to what was on the highways, they wanted to distance themselves from the establishment,? says Clor. Ford delivered just such a vehicle in the Mustang, and tried to include the Baby Boomer generation in the process.

An early tagline for the Mustang was directed right at the young consumers Ford hoped to lure in; ?The Mustang is a car designed to be designed by you.? Unfortunately the whole documentary is only available if you buy the Mad Men season four box set, which will set you back at least $20.

If you?re still interested in how Ford marketed the Mustang, Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson produced an excellent look at the rebellious image and marketing success of this iconic pony car. It?s definitely worth a look, and you?ll want to stick around for Clarkson?s jaw-dropping declaration at the very end. Cheers!

For Dell, buyout uncertainty adds to poor PC sales outlook

By Poornima Gupta

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Months of public bickering, secretive backroom negotiations and eleventh-hour deals for control of Dell Inc belie the fact that the combatants are vying for a company facing steadily declining sales prospects.

The tussle between Chief Executive Michael Dell and firebrand activist investor Carl Icahn is also starting to spook some customers.

It's the last thing a company, grappling with the ever-darkening global outlook for personal computers, needs. IDC estimates Dell's PC shipments slid 4.2 percent in the second quarter, compared to a year earlier.

Some customers have begun asking if Dell is even going to be around in the longer term, said Michael Gavaghen, vice president of sales and marketing at Florida-based Dell reseller SL Powers. Sales are taking longer to close as well, he said.

"We hold their hand and gently say to just table the purchasing decision another few weeks," said Gavaghen. He stressed, however, that customers are "not fleeing by any means."

The cacophony surrounding the $25 billion buyout bid proposed by Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners has picked up over the past month. Icahn threatened to wage a campaign to replace the CEO and his board, and sued the company in Delaware to try to force an earlier shareholder vote.

Michael Dell raised his offer twice to try to win over major investors. A shareholder vote has been scheduled for September after being delayed three times.

Morale within the company is stable for now, say some employees, though they add that could change rapidly if Icahn has his way and were to reshuffle management.

John Pucillo-Dunphy, senior engineer and owner of Miracle Networking Solutions, a Dell reseller based in Middleboro, Massachusetts, said he supports Dell's going private and is more comfortable with Michael Dell's leadership since it remains unclear what Icahn's long game is.

"I have seen the emails from Michael Dell. I haven't seen anything from Icahn," Pucillo-Dunphy said.

Icahn, who with 8.9 percent of the company is now its second-largest shareholder, has said little about what future he envisions for the company beyond that it has promising prospects based on its large base of PC customers, and that it should remain partly public.

Pucillo-Dunphy said customers are not overly concerned about the drama. "For the most part, they kind of have that mentality that (Dell is) too big to fail."

The company declined to comment on the issue. Michael Dell sent employees an email on Thursday exhorting the troops to stay focused. He followed that up on Friday with a similar assurance for customers.

"I know this hasn't been an easy time. The competition has been aggressive during this period of uncertainty, but we are, as we have always been, determined to prove to you why Dell is the best solutions provider to meet your needs," the CEO said.

WATCHING AND WAITING

China's Lenovo zipped into first place for PC sales globally in the second quarter, and its 16.7 percent market share now takes it past Hewlett-Packard's 16.4 percent, IDC estimates. Dell is No. 3 at 12.2 percent.

Apart from personal computers, analysts say arch-rival HP already outpaces Dell in key areas of the industry including networking and storage. HP is also making strides into enterprise computing, catching attention with its just-launched Moonshot micro-servers, intended to save on power and costs for corporations.

"Without individual specifics, (it is) safe to say that the roadmap is robust," said Dell spokesman David Frink, adding that the company will soon host a number of customer conferences around the world to showcase new products and services.

Analysts have so far refrained from estimating the longer-term impact of the battle on Dell's business. They are watching the situation carefully ahead of the company's quarterly earnings release on August 20.

"It's going to be a high-risk and painful process," Morningstar analyst Carr Lanphier said, adding that the unsettled outcome "makes customers leery."

The average Wall Street forecast is for quarterly profit of $417 million, about half the $875 million reported a year ago. Revenue is expected to slip 2 percent to $14.2 billion.

Dell's fortunes remain closely tied to PC sales, despite $13 billion in acquisitions since 2008 to expand into everything from software to networking. PC sales, which have been shrinking for the last three years, still yield half of revenue.

Global PC sales are expected to fall 7 percent this year and 4.5 percent next year, according to analysts at CLSA. Dell's revenue is seen shrinking every year through 2016, according to Boston Consulting Group, the firm hired by Dell's board to review the buyout offer.

"Investors should take the Silver Lake-Michael Dell bid and run for the hills," said Brian Marshall, analyst with ISI Group. He said the company may end up underperforming his earnings forecast of 26 cents per share on revenue of $14.3 billion.

The CEO, responding to opposition to his buyout, had raised his offer price this month by a dime to $13.75 a share and tacked on a special dividend of 13 cents per share. Before the offer was announced in February, shares were trading around $10 apiece.

Michael Dell, who holds roughly a 16 percent stake in the company he started in college in 1984, wants to overhaul it without interference from shareholders. His option involves sticking to a path established years ago, of transforming the company into a provider of services like storage and computing to corporations and government agencies, in IBM's mold.

Yet even if he should triumph over Icahn, some analysts think it may be too late, since a large swathe of the corporate market has been locked up by IBM and Hewlett-Packard Co.

"HP and IBM have being doing this for the last seven to 10 years," said Steven Nathasingh, managing director at research and consulting firm Vaxa Inc. "Dell has just started."

F1: Jackie Stewart says 2014 absence for India is ''not good''

From GMM

Sitting out next year's F1 calendar is "not a good message" being sent by organisers of the Indian grand prix.

That is the warning of triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart, following news India will not host a race next year before returning to F1 in 2015.

Amid the undoubted tax and customs issues, and the pressure on F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone to limit the calendar to 20 races next year, Indian organisers insist missing 2014 is simply "a scheduling matter".

"These kinds of adjustments take place all the time," said a spokesman for organisers Jaypee.

He explained that Ecclestone offered India a March date on the 2014 calendar, but with this year's race taking place in October, the two races would have taken place too closely together.

"We were then given the option of holding it in March in subsequent years," said the spokesman.

But Stewart, a veteran figure in the F1 paddock for almost five decades, indicated he thinks the real issue is about tax and customs.

"F1 has been able to handle the issue in every other country we go to -- whether it's Hungary, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia or China," the 74-year-old told the India-Asian News Service.

And Stewart said the situation, culminating in India skipping at least the 2014 schedule, could hurt the country's F1 foray.

"It is certainly not a good message the Indian grand prix is sending out to the motor sports world, and is not positive for India's image when questions are raised about it," he said.

Not only that, spectator numbers dropped from 95,000 for the inaugural race in 2011 to just 60,000 last year. And after October's race, 16 months will pass before India hosts the next grand prix.

"This year's race is crucial," Jackie Stewart agreed, "and if the race in 2015 gets the right promotion, there's no reason why it shouldn't again attract large crowds."

The Weekend Debate

Hey there folks. After a fortnight?s absence, Weekend Debate returns! Your topic for debate this week is a straightforward one. I?d like to know what?s the most emotional moment you?ve ever experienced in a videogame?

The incredible conclusion of Journey perhaps? The harrowing opening scenes of The Last of Us? Aeris? demise in Final Fantasy VII? Let me know below.

The four most eloquently put suggestions win themselves two PS Vita titles: Little Deviants and Smart As.

I?ll admit that I have a slightly ulterior motive for this week?s discussion, which will be revealed next week. Even if you?re not interested in the prize on offer, I?d love it if you all chimed in!

Bill Gates Promotes Vaccine Projects, Swipes At Google

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Nerval's Lobster writes "In a new interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, Bill Gates discussed his Foundation's work to eradicate polio and malaria, while suggesting that vaccine programs and similar initiatives to fight disease and poverty will ultimately do much more for the world than technology projects devoted to connecting everybody to the Internet. While Gates professes his belief in the so-called digital revolution, he doesn't think projects such as Google's Internet blimps (designed to transmit WiFi signals over hundreds of miles, bringing Internet to underserved areas in the process) will do the third world nearly as much as good as basic healthcare. "When you're dying of malaria, I suppose you'll look up and see that [Internet] balloon, and I'm not sure how it'll help you," he said. "When a kid gets diarrhea, no, there's no website that relieves that." Gates then sharpened his attack on the search-engine giant: "Google started out saying they were going to do a broad set of things. They hired Larry Brilliant, and they got fantastic publicity. And then they shut it all down." Google focusing on its core mission is fine, he added, "but the actors who just do their core thing are not going to uplift the poor." The Microsoft co-founder also has no intention of following Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and other tech entrepreneurs into the realm of space exploration. "I guess it's fun, because you shoot rockets up in the air," he said. "But it's not an area that I'll be putting money into.""

Reid: Hope GOP opposition to Obama isn't over race

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he hopes Republicans who oppose the president do so "based on substance and not the fact that he's an African-American."

The comment came during a wide-ranging interview Friday with Las Vegas-based National Public Radio affiliate KNPR (http://bit.ly/16AheWv), in which Reid lamented Republican filibusters and claimed opponents do everything they can to make Obama fail.

He recalled that Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said during Obama's first term that his most important goal was ensuring Obama wasn't re-elected. McConnell was speaking about financial issues and said he wanted Obama to change, not to fail.

McConnell's office referred a request for comment to Sen. Tim Scott, a black Republican from South Carolina, who said Reid's remarks were offensive and asked for an apology.

Reid also criticized members of the tea party, comparing them to anarchists who helped spark World War I. He said that while modern anarchists don't resort to violence, they do not believe in government and rejoice in its troubles.

(AP) ? Tiger Woods is off to a strong start at the PGA Championship.

The 14-time major champion began on the back side Thursday, making the turn with a 2-under 33. He birdied the par-5 13th hole at Oak Hill, chipping up within inches of the hole for a tap in. Then, at the par-3 15th, he stuck his tee shot about 10 feet away and made the putt. A couple of nice par saves left him two strokes behind co-leaders Robert Garrigus and David Heard.

Taking advantage of soft conditions after overnight rain, Garrigus began with a 33 on the back side and added birdies at the second and fourth holes. Hearn started with a bogey at No. 1 but bounced back to make birdie on five of the next 10.

'Blackhawk Down's' Tom Sizemore joins Sundance channel's 'The Red Road'

By Jethro Nededog

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Hollywood veteran Tom Sizemore is joining the cast of Sundance Channel's upcoming original series, "The Red Road."

He'll play Jack Kopus, father to Jason Momoa's ex-con Native American character, Phillip. Jack is described as "a terrifying and unpredictable drug dealer." During the course of the series, Phillip arrives home to his northern New Jersey small town to run his father's drug ring.

Sizemore has starred in the films "Saving Private Ryan," "Black Hawk Down," "Pearl Harbor," and "Heat," among many others. His TV credits include "Law & Order: SVU," "Hawaii Five-0," and "Crash."

He joins already announced cast members, Momoa, Martin Henderson and Julianne Nicholson on the series.

The Sundance Channel ordered six one-hour episodes of "The Red Road," which comes from writer Aaron Guzikowski ("Contraband," "Prisoners") and veteran producer Sarah Condon ("Bored to Death"). They will executive produce with Bridget Carpenter ("Friday Night Lights," "Parenthood") serving as executive producer and showrunner. James Gray ("Two Lovers," "We Own The Night") will direct the first episode.

"The Red Road" is Sundance Channel's second original scripted series after "Rectify," which returns for a second season in 2014.

Gunman kills four people, wounds four others in Texas shootings

By Marice Richter

DALLAS (Reuters) - A former Texas special education teacher, described by a colleague as a "gentle giant," was suspected of shooting four people dead and wounding four others after an apparent domestic dispute late on Wednesday, police said.

The shooting spree began inside a home in Dallas and ended soon afterward in another house in DeSoto, a suburb about 15 miles south, said Corporal Melissa Franks of the DeSoto, Texas Police Department.

A suspect identified as Erbie Bowser was taken into custody, Franks said.

Bowser was a well-liked special education teacher in Mesquite, Texas, who resigned in 2010, said Laura Jobe, a spokeswoman for the Mesquite Independent School District.

A woman in her early 40s and a 17-year-old girl were found dead at the first residence, police said. No description was given for the people who were killed at the second residence.

Two of the people who were wounded were described as a 17-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy. No details were given of the other two people who were wounded.

Police said the first emergency call came at about 10:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday from a woman who became concerned after speaking by phone with one of the people at the first residence. She drove to the house but no one answered the door, so she called 911. Police found two people dead inside.

Soon after the initial discovery, another emergency call was received from the second residence, where police found two more bodies.

"We do believe this is a domestic-related incident," a police official said.

All of the those killed were believed to have died from gunshot wounds, police said, although some other type of weapon was involved, police said.

"I believe there was an explosive device used," Franks said, adding that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies had been brought in to investigate.

Army spokesman Troy A. Rolan said a man named Erbie Bowser served in the U.S. Army from October 1991 to November 2000, reaching the rank of sergeant and receiving several medals, including one for good conduct, and received an "Expert Infantryman" badge.

Jobe said Bowser, a certified special education teacher, worked at two schools in the Mesquite Independent School District from December 2001 through March 2010. He also coached football at the West Mesquite High School.

"He left on good terms. He did resign, he was not terminated," she said.

"He had a good history here. He was well liked. He's been described as a gentle giant," Jobe said.

A spokesman for the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team confirmed that Bowser had been a member of the group's male dance team, the Mavs ManiAACs. He left the squad in 2009 and the basketball team had not been in contact with him since, the spokesman said, declining to be named.

Franks said no information about the suspect's background would be released, pending the filing of formal charges.

?Zadok?s is another jewelry store in Houston that has a good selection of interesting Swiss watches. They?re only a short drive from the Galleria, so they?re worth the trip if you?re out shopping. Their lines are interesting. They sell Jaeger LeCoultre, IWC, Franck Mueller, Breitling, Corum, and the ever-popular Paneri, amongst other more pedestrian brands. I think they?re the only Houston seller of Chronoswiss, a small maker of some very beautiful modern classic watches.?

?I visited their San Felipe location this past weekend to purchase a Cartier watch for my husband. I did my research before buying this gift for my husband; I knew how much I should pay and what to expect from the watch. I paid a little more than what I wanted to pay but am overall please since they had the product in stock and the customer service was excellent. ?

?This jewelry store in Houston happens to be somewhat knowledgeable in the items that they sell, which is a big plus for me. ?They try to show you the goods, but aren?t extremely pushy about it. ?They have plenty to choose from, though the workers seem bored with their jobs and maybe a bit disenchanted with all the beauty that surrounds them since they see it everyday. ?For a small, mom & pop type shop, this is worth checking out if you?re planning to make a big purchase.?

?My fianc? (now husband) and I picked out our wedding bands from Zadok?s (my engagement ring was a family heirloom) and we both got exactly what we wanted. The staff was extremely helpful and we walked out the same day with our beautiful wedding bands.?

This Convenient, Compatible Camera Is Your Mirrorless Deal Of The Day

The fine folks at B&H Photo are heavily discounting the Canon EOS M 18MP Mirrorless Camera for a limited time. $300 gets you the camera body with the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM Lens, and you also have the option of bumping it up to $350 to get a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens instead. These prices are significantly lower than we've seen before, and in no-brainer range if you want Canon glass while conserving maximum real estate in your bag, and who doesn't want both of those things?

(AP) ? A foreign ministry official says two spokesmen for President Mohammed Morsi have quit in the latest defections from his embattled administration as protesters and the military challenge his authority.

The official says career diplomats Omar Amer and Ihab Fahmy have stepped down after nearly five months speaking on behalf of Morsi.

The official spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The move compounds the woes for Morsi as he faces massive protests calling for his ouster.

On Monday, six Cabinet ministers quit and the military gave the president a 48-hour ultimatum to work out his differences with the opposition or it will intervene and oversee the implementation of its own political road map. The ultimatum expires Wednesday.

Clock ticks for Egypt's Morsi as army ultimatum deadline looms

LIVE VIDEO: Protesters gather in Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo, Egypt.

By Charlene Gubash and Ian Johnston, NBC News

CAIRO - The clock is ticking for Egypt?s President Mohammed Morsi to meet the demands of millions of protesters seeking his ouster and fresh elections after an ultimatum issued to the Islamist leader by his own armed forces.

If Morsi does not meet the demands by Wednesday, the military has said it will impose its own ?road map? for the future.

Morsi rejected the army?s call in a statement issued at 2 a.m. local time Tuesday (8 p.m. Monday ET) by saying his administration would continue on its "previously plotted path" toward reconciliation. Violence during the protests at the weekend saw 16 people killed and hundreds injured.

Barack Obama and the United Nations have each urged Morsi to listen to his people, as a vast crowd gathered once again in Cairo's Tahrir Square Tuesday.

Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the United Nations? High Commissioner for Human Rights, told a briefing Tuesday that they were following the ?extremely tense situation? in Egypt with ?great concern.?

?We urge all political parties and social groups to urgently engage in a serious national dialogue in order to find a solution to the political crisis and prevent an escalation of violence,? Colville said.

?We call on the president of Egypt to listen to the demands and wishes of the Egyptian people, expressed during these huge protests over the past few days, and to address key issues raised by the opposition and civil society in recent months, as well as to heed the lessons of the past in this particularly fragile situation,? he added.

NBC's Richard Engel reports from Cairo, where he says "it feels like a new revolution could be underway" as opponents of Mohammed Morsi are demanding he be removed from the presidency.

He welcomed assurances given by the military and law enforcement agencies that ?no measures will be taken that could lead to excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators.?

The White House said in a statement Tuesday that Obama had called Morsi on Monday, urging him to listen to ?the voices of all Egyptians.?

Obama told Morsi that the United States was ?committed to the democratic process in Egypt and does not support any single party or group.?

But the president also ?stressed that democracy is about more than elections.?

Suhaib Salem / Reuters

The headquarters of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood was ransacked as widespread protests against President Mohammed Morsi turned violent.

?It is also about ensuring that the voices of all Egyptians are heard and represented by their government, including the many Egyptians demonstrating throughout the country,? the statement said.

Obama encouraged Morsi ?to take steps to show that he is responsive to their concerns, and underscored that the current crisis can only be resolved through a political process,? it added.

?President Obama also underscored his deep concern about violence during the demonstrations, especially sexual assaults against female citizens,? the White House said. ?He reiterated his belief that all Egyptians protesting should express themselves peacefully, and urged President Morsi to make clear to his supporters that all forms of violence are unacceptable.?

Amid the heightened tensions, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was closed on Tuesday with regular consular service suspended. It was also closed on Sunday. U.S. citizens were advised to ?avoid areas where large gatherings may occur.?

On June 28, the State Department allowed a ?limited number of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and family members? to leave the country ?due to the ongoing political and social unrest.?

Canada said on Twitter that its embassy in Cairo would be ?closed until further notice for security reasons.?

According to an airport security source, ?a list has been circulated containing the names of 48 leading members of political parties, including the Muslim Brotherhood, who must now inform national security officials before leaving the country. The use of private jets has also been temporarily banned.

It remains unclear whether the Egyptian army was actually calling for Morsi to stand down, or whether it would accept some attempted compromise.

However, a statement issued by Morsi?s office complained said that it was not consulted about the army?s ultimatum and said ?the presidency sees that some of the statements in it carry meanings that could cause confusion in the complex national environment.?

It added that his administration was ?going forward on its previously plotted path to promote comprehensive national reconciliation ... regardless of any statements that deepen divisions between citizens.?

Protesters attacked and stormed the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo, calling for Egypt's president Mohammed Morsi to step down. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Morsi?s office, discussing the call with Obama, said the U.S. was ?working with the Egyptian leadership elected by the Egyptian people and supports peaceful democratic conditions in Egypt.?

?The president confirmed that Egypt is moving forward in a peaceful democratic transition built on constitution and law,? Morsi?s office said.

It also said that Egypt?s ?democratic, civil, modern state? was ?the most important achievement? of the revolution that deposed former President Hosni Mubarak.

?We will not allow Egypt with all its forces to return backward under any circumstances,? Morsi?s office said. ?Egypt has paid dearly from the blood of its sons and its stability and security and its delayed the path to development, these are the high prices it paid to build a new state. We all chose democratic means as the only safest way to manage our differences of opinion."

Ian Johnston reported from London.

Chemistry and physics: one needs the other

?Quantum theory has opened to us the microscopic world of particles, atoms and photons,? explained Nobel Laureate Serge Haroche, who shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in physics with David Wineland. In this sentence, Haroche answered why two physicists certainly belong onstage at the 63rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting for chemistry. Haroche?s talk, called ?Controlling Photons in a Box, Quantum,? dovetailed with Wineland?s lecture just before on ?Superposition, Entanglement, and Raising Schr?dinger?s Cat.? (?Though in half an hour, it?s very difficult to give you details,? quipped Haroche.)

During his presentation late Monday morning, Haroche offered at least one concrete example of how physics propelled chemistry research forward: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Chemists working today have Felix Bloch and Edward Mills Purcell ? both awarded the Nobel Prize in 1952 ? to thank for their tireless puzzling (and discovering) about nuclear magnetic properties.

Throughout their speeches, Haroche and Wineland dipped into bodies of research as deep as Lake Constance herself. Most of the terms became entangled and stayed superimposed over my head, much like the atomic ions and energy states Wineland described in his talk.

The researcher sitting next to me in the audience nodded his head enthusiastically when Wineland showed a slide with the ideal ?controlled-NOT? gate between internal states. I heard some low murmurs of agreement when we moved on to the possibilities that exist with ?gold-coated alumnia wafers.? But I appreciated Wineland?s main message: We are ever closer to entering the world that Schr?dinger dreamed about. He wanted scientists to test his theories in experiments with just one electron or atom or other small molecule.

Thought experiments and taxi drivers

Before delving into the famous Bohr-Einstein debate at the 1927 Solvay conference, in which those two great minds debated quantum mechanics using thought experiments, Haroche offered the audience a real-life application. On the topic of atomic clocks and GPS, Haroche explained that such technology could lead to geo-localization accuracy to within 1 meter anywhere on Earth. ?Taxi drivers everywhere use quantum physics!? Haroche said to laughter in the audience.
