KATMANDU, Nepal ? Around 1,200 foreign trekkers stranded in the Mount Everest area for about a week because planes were grounded due to heavy fog have been evacuated so far.
The weather cleared Monday at Lukla airport, allowing flights to resume and the deliveries of food and supplies to the area. An additional 1,500 trekkers were waiting to depart as evacuation flights continued Tuesday.
Purna Prasad Chudal, the manager of the airport in the capital, Katmandu, says planes are taking bread, eggs, noodles, fresh meat and vegetables to Lukla.
Flights at Lukla's Tenzing-Hillary Airport were grounded Oct. 31. Lukla sits at an altitude of 9,200 feet (2,800 meters), and the airport is the gateway for trekkers and mountaineers heading to Everest and surrounding mountains.
