Location: Little Rock, AR 72204
Posted date: August 30, 2011

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), classified both as doctoral research institution and as a community-engaged university in the Carnegie categories of institutions of higher education, seeks a Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.? As chief academic officer of the university, the Provost and Academic Vice Chancellor reports to the Chancellor and provides leadership for instructional, research, and outreach programs of the university.

UALR is a doctoral research institution and community-engaged university in the Carnegie categories of institutions of higher education.??? The university is located in an urban area with a population of over one million people within a fifty mile radius. ?This area has grown by more than 25% in the past two decades. The Brookings Institute listed Little Rock as America?s ?Fourth Strongest Economy,? Kiplinger listed it as America?s 7th ?Best Value City? and The Daily Beast as America?s 10th ?Best City for College Graduates.? Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas, which was one of only four states in the nation with a budget surplus in the previous fiscal year. As a metropolitan university UALR endorses the traditional values of a quality research university while also promoting a strong interactive relationship with the larger community through quality applied research as defined by Ernest Boyer.

UALR enrolls a diverse student body of approximately 13,000 students of which some 2,400 are enrolled in post-baccalaureate studies.? About 1,000 students are housed on campus.? The rest commute while seeking undergraduate and graduate/professional degrees in six colleges and two free-standing schools.? The colleges include Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Business; Education; Professional Studies, including the School of Mass Communications and the School of Social Work; Engineering and Information Technology; and Sciences and Mathematics.? The two free-standing schools are the Graduate School and the Bowen School of Law.? The university encompasses several major outreach units: the Institute for Economic Advancement, the Institute of Government, the Graduate Institute of Technology, the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center, and the Institute on Race and Ethnicity as well as thriving Off-Campus Credit Programs.? Evidence of the growth of the university into the 21st century is seen in the recently constructed Engineering and Information Technology Center, the Nanotechnology Research Center, the Student Services One-Stop Center currently under construction, and the newly completed West Hall campus residence for academic scholarship students. Additional information is available at www.ualr.edu.

The Provost will lead in the recruitment, development, and retention of high quality and productive faculty and the continued growth of high quality academic/research programs.? The Provost will also lead institutional efforts to assess student-learning outcomes and to evaluate academic programs on a regular basis.? The Provost will work with the Office of Development in fundraising and will encourage and support faculty and staff in their quests for grants and contracts that further the mission of the university.? Additionally, the Provost will nurture partnerships with the nearby University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Pulaski Technical College, other area two-year colleges, area school districts, the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, the Clinton Presidential Center, and a variety of other community organizations and groups.
