Business Travel in Moderation Is Good for Your Health

Frequent flyer miles aren?t the only benefit of all that business travel ? you might be doing your overall health a big favor, too.? In a recent study, researchers found that those who traveled up to 6 nights per month on business related travel actually had a better health profile than those who didn?t travel at all. Time to happily hop on that plane or get in that car and start traveling.

While this may be contrary to what you might expect, the negative impact of travel wasn?t actually seen until people started traveling more than 2 weeks per month.? In these busiest travelers, the effects of sedentary activity, stress and diet were more pronounced.? Even though the study relied on self-reported health factors, those who had light travel (6 days or less per month) had a better health status compared to those who didn?t travel at all, as well as those who traveled heavily each month.

Regardless of the amount of travel, sedentary activity contributes heavily to the obesity epidemic in this country and is one of the measures looked at in the health profile in this study.? At an astonishing 33.8 percent national prevalence rate for obesity, it seems steps need to be taken to help reduce that rate.? As such, a recent article gave some good health tips for those trying to maintain their fitness levels while traveling:

  • Pack essential work out items
  • Start right away wherever possible (walking in the parking lot and airport, etc.)
  • Check out the nearby facilities of your destination before leaving home (gym, park, etc.)
  • Stick to your routine as you would at home (no excuses!)

So grab that roller bag, throw on that power suit and get ready for another short-term business adventure every month.? You may be giving more than just your career a boost.
